Hi. I have joined this site in the hope that others may be able to assist with some issues currently being experienced within my family unit. I'm in a relationship with a wonderful man who is father to a 20 year old autistic son. Last few years the son has taken an aversion to me. He doesn't listen to a single thing I say. Tells me I'm not his mother so cant tell him what to do. He is very rude to his dad wont help out around the house as his father has some health issues. He just sots in his room all the time playing his Playstation. Is there anyone out there with an adult autistic person that I can talk to that could provide some insight into how to speak to the son and get him to work with me and not rebel against everything we say to him. We always get the response I'm over 18 so you can't tell me what to do. His dad and I are at wits end.

It seems like you can't do much. His father needs to talk to the boy, it sucks that you are put in this situation.

I won't say any more because I'd likely offend, I'm not good at dealing with social situations.

Welcome Jenny

Sounds like a tough situation, but I do agree with Stephf. You'll find that it's not uncommon for some, young, Aspies, to be a little defiant.

I'm afraid I haven't much advice for you myself, but I recommend trying to re-post this issue, in another section of the forums, as not everyone will check the "Introductory threads". Perhaps it would also help to highlight the main issue, in the title (eg. "Dealing with defiant young adult").

I also recommend checking our resources section too. I've added a few links below, which may interest you.
