Obsessive compulsive disorder

Hi.

How many of you have or had in the past obsessive compulsive disorder ?

I have it when teenager then controlled it with logical thinking but when I was stressed starts again but I can controll it.

It's right thas OCD is very common among AS ?

I am told I wash my hands too much and still do. Even if it was a snack or touch anything I have to keep my hands clean.

I was never diagnosed with OCD but when I was 9 I developed an obsession with germs due to my fear of becoming ill with a stomach bug that was doing the rounds at that time. At first it was just washing my hands after touching anything I perceived to be "contaminated", then refusing to touch these things at all and putting aside my own set of cutlery to eat with because I was afraid the family's cutlery had germs on it which would make me sick. I even smuggled disinfectant and sterile wipes up to my bedroom because I was afraid whoever went in there would leave their germs. I noticed that it started to become less severe after I ended up catching a vomiting bug anyway, when I was 11, and these days I still have a tendency to wash my hands more than necessary but I'm nowhere near as bad as I once was. Thinking about it, I probably did have OCD at that time.

I was first diagnosed at age 19 with OCD, Manic Depressive Disorder ( later changed to Bipolar II) SAD and ADHD. To think only six months ago I find out I have Aspergers and are not any of that was pretty mind boggling!

I used to be quite obsessive about some things in my younger years but thankfully I'm a lot better now apart from still being a bit obsessive about cleaning my teeth as I had problems for years with having a dry mouth caused by medication. Having had bad toothache in the past teeth cleaning became very important.

I've had this for a long time as far as I can remember. If I shake hands with someone I often think of that hand as "dirty" until I can wash it or get some hand sanitizer. Its not that the other person is dirty its just that I feel like its somehow I need to clean my hands. I also have a tough time leaving the house without continuously checking to make sure things are unplugged or the stove isn't on or I locked the door. That kind of stuff.

I was diagnosed with OCD, it manifested itself with intrusive thoughts and it took over my whole life to the point I was contemplating suicide. The more I battled against the intrusive thoughts the worse it got. Thankfully it has calmed down significantly that it only manifests itself on rare occasions (the past two nights being the most recent).

OCD NOS. I have the OCD parts that coincide with the AS. Things like only eating off of certain dishes I have certain forks and knives and spoons I will eat off if they are not clean I get upset. Things like Checking my bag for homework 3times. I have a thing about 3's and certain things in 2's. I always need to be in the middle bathroom stall or I have issues with that. When I was younger they said that i didn't have enough to be actually classifyed with having OCD, I think they thought I might grow out of it. Anyway....

Arashi, it is really interesting that you say that, because I do exactly the same thing! Check my purse several times, check my pockets several times before I lock my car, I count steps and get annoyed if they are not divisible by six or by eight...but by most standards, I am not remotely OCD (not obsessed with germs, organization, whatnot). I always assumed it was just a side effect of Aspergers'.
