Pdd-nos or Aspergers?

Slash

Well-Known Member
I've been studying Aspergers syndrome extensively. I want to say that this describes me. My son was diagnosed with AS over a year ago, his mother says that she thinks he has Pdd-nos. She also believes that whatever he has, is what I have, and that I just never knew it. When I started learning about it, it's like a little light went on in my head. I said "wow, so this is why I'm so different".

Here's some symptoms that I have:

I hate going in crowded places (such as grocery stores)(I get into a very bad mood)
I get nervous when I meet new people and It takes a while for me to get comfortable with them.
I do not like small talk if it's not about an interest of mine.
When I talk about an interest, I tend to monopolize the conversation.
Although my interests change every few years, they are like obsessions and I spend a lot of time thinking about them.
I really hate loud noise (beeping of car horns, ambulance siren, etc.) I think its rude.

Even though I display these symptoms(and I'm sure there's more) I can read peoples faces and I can tell when there's something wrong or whatever. I don't really understand body language and I can't usually pick up on non verbal cues however.

Before this, I thought I had avoidant personality disorder or introvert personality. I also scored high on the AQ test.

I'm planning on seeing a neurologist soon to get tested so I know for sure. But, what do you all think I probably have? pdd-nos? AS? Avoidant?

The light going on was the clue,
Aspergers.
Remember that all people are different, and so the signs will be different in each of us.
Welcome to the rest of your life.

Have you considered that you have NVLD (non-verbal Learning disability)? I have both I have AS and NVLD. So I am wondering if maybe you have that instead of PDD NOS or AS. You seem to fit in to the NVLD because of the body language thing. Non verbal cues and such. From it sounds like you probably have AS with NVLD, NVLD, I know a lot of diagnosticians are struggling with PDD NOS or AS diagnosis for people right now as really if they are going by the DSM V they don't exist they are just lumped into high functioning autism with a specficer stating which part of the spectrum they fall.

I never liked the idea of having all of these different disorders and diagnosis' that all seem to encompass the same symptoms. Psychology is about as far from an exact science as it gets. PPD-NOS, Aspergers, and high functioning Autism are all the same in my book. Just because two people share the same symtoms but one of them learned to walk and talk a little later in life is not a big enough of a difference to differenciate between two wholey seperate disorders. It sounds to me like you fit the description of either diagnosis and the treatments are the same either way.

You can see the neurologist if you want but you know yourself better than any doctor. If it is any significant hit to your finances, i would suggest against it. If you need a official diagnosis for other reasons, i would suggest a qualified therapist as it might be a bit cheaper.
