It happened to me again today but it hasn't happened for some time now and then bang! I was talking to a woman about some bureaucratic problem I had and the truth is I didn't know who the heck she was. She was saying, "Well, we discussed such and such last time.." and I'm wondering who is she? Or more accurately it was a case of is she or isn't she the person who I think she might be?
Dare I ask who she is? Would people around titter and would she herself be totally astonished? You feel such an idiot and very awkward. I decided to just agree and hope she was the person who I figured she had to be.
Even worse, a few weeks ago I was in a supermarket shopping and was looking for some item. I approached a woman nearby and asked if she knew where such and such an item was kept in the store. The woman looked at me confused and said, "Don't you know me?" Feeling flushed, I muttered affirmative not having a clue what was going on. Well, it was a friend of family I knew really well but hadn't recognised her.
There was a time this used to really shake me up. I mean, I thought I was literally going mad. I'd be at work and have to sign people in. After signing a few people in, another manager would later pop in and ask, "Has such and such arrived yet" and I didn't have a clue. Scores of times I had to bluff it out and hope I didn't get made to look like an idiot.
People used to comment I didn't seem to know what was going on around me.
