Pets becoming 'fur babies,' survey finds

I have a very strong aversion to the term "fur babies" or to people referring to themselves as their pet's "mommy". It makes me very uncomfortable.

That being said, I'm a cat lady and I spend way too much time talking with and/or about my cats.

I do refer to my dogs as my kids and I do call myself Mummy when talking to them sometimes.
That said, I wouldn't call myself Mummy when talking to anyone else about them. I do kind of cringe when other people do that!
I don't mind the term 'fur babies' though. I do think animals should be considered family once you have committed to keeping them. They should never be considered disposable items, which sadly some people do.

Whilst I'm aware others use this term in an affectionate way I personally take the term too literally and have no tolerance for it.
It too makes me cringe. I'm usually puzzled when I hear owners talk about being a "mummy" to a wild animal, albeit slightly domesticated.

It's a companion animal or working live stock. In no way is it a human baby.

To build a mutually respectful and quite intense bond with a domesticated companion animal we first have to understand and respect the species. Traits of the breed, how it's survival skills have evolved, it's limitations and capabilities, form of communication. What it is to be a cat or dog or rabbit, rat and any other type of companion animal.

I can't understand how that might be achieved if we are to give a domesticated wild animal human attributes (which they will never have because they're not and never will be human)

I do understand a bond with an animal built on understanding, mutual trust, respect and fulfilment, the intensity of that bond and the mutual rewards of the relationship.
But there is a boundary between humans and dogs or cats. Different species.

I refer to my dog as my daughter sometimes. Animals certainly differ from humans but I like them just as much as I like humans.

I have the same aversion to naming/thinking of them in human terms. That said I value them (all animals, domesticated pets especially) immensely and virtually on the same level as people.

I have more time and tolerance for animals than most people.

Some folk use that as a punchline, ..."I prefer my dog to most people, lol"

I actually do :)
Given a choice, I'd choose my dog.

...my cats choose for themselves, if I'm useful (food, fuss, grooming, warmth) I'll be paid attention :)

Life or death :
Given the choice id rather choose your dog than some people...

What I don't like is when somebody judges somebody else because they call their pet their baby and they are their pets mummy.
Nobody is perfect so why do they think they can judge them

I just brought home two baby bunnies today. And I am already referring to them as my little babies and my boyfriend as their daddy. I however will not call them "fur-babies". I just don't care for the combination.

What colours are they ,the neighbours on my left had black-and-white and I think another black one sadly the black one got out because they hadn't checked the fences were dug down far enough into the ground I found their rabbit on the road ,I can't understand neuro typicals ,how cold they can be .I can't tell you the story of why I've just said that it's too upsetting .

Brown/grey and solid black. Right now they are in their "nursery" taking a nap. Their daddy is an architect and is building the big bunny house this week. Should be interesting. There has even been talk of cutting a hole in the exterior wall so they could have easy access to an outdoor play pen. Sorry about your neighbor's bunny, too bad everyone isn't more careful. Bunnies are burrowing animals, they should have been more careful.

The view that I've heard seems to be dogs are important not other animals it sickens me

I would never use the term "fur babies", but I do see my cat as almost like a child and I have used the word, "Daddy" to describe myself and also when talking to her. I also see my cat as my companion and more of an equal than a pet and the only time I would refer to her as an owner is if I'm forced to on paperwork. I believe that all animals have exactly the same right to be happy and to live as we do (I'm in fact a vegetarian and have been for over 21 years). If my cat wants something she will usually get it even if it means interrupting something I'm doing, she does get spoilt lol! A friend of mine sometimes condemns me for caring more about my cat than my friends. I see my cat as equally important when he unfortunately thinks animals are less important and has referred to her as being, "only a cat", but a cat also requires looking after unlike him. He also thinks it's stupid to talk to her which I disagree, my cat picks up words of English and most definitely reacts to them, even if she doesn't understand all the words, she most definitely picks up on the tones and because I usually talk very monotone, I make an extra effort to enthesize a high pitch tone when talking to her. I also think far too many people underestimate animals, my cat most certainly has a soul, she has emotions, feelings Etc. and most definitely shows this every day.

True, all animals have the same importance, E.g. cats, rabbits, birds, but it also includes farm animals. In fact I'd love to have a small pig as a pet, they're extremely intelligent, more so than even dogs and unlike traditional belief they can also be very clean. Like any reasonably intelligent animal pigs all have their own unique personalities and again show emotions, feelings Etc.

Edit:

Most people wouldn't consider a cow intelligent and they're normally treated like objects, but look at this:

I believe people think cows are unintelligent to justify the way we treat them, but they also have unique personalities, feelings and emotions. More people should stop underestimating ALL animals, not just animals that are generally accepted as pets and treat them with a lot more respect. This lucky cow is called Elizabeth even though he's male because they initially thought he was a female and didn't want to change his name (well he's really a bull, not a cow). Note: Relevance to the original thread, the woman who rescued him was referred to as his "mom" in the video and he is said to be having fun with his "family", in other words they don't own him, instead he is more of an equal.

My neighbors have a grey rabbit called Stormy who has got out more times than I can count. I can't believe they keep getting him back. I've rescued him at least 3 or 4 times but I swear if I see him out again I'm gonna take him to RSPCA. Some people just shouldn't have animals!

I'm glad I saw it it looked wrong just lying on the road ,I wish people would find some way to put a fluorescent marker on their rabbits or a collar.
It's terrible to think it was knocked by a car! and then thrown at the side of the road ,why did it have to go onto that road .people drive on that road like they've lost the will to live.
I wish my legs were strong ,I'd love to go and see the wild rabbits in the park they move so fast if they see a human .
That's the thing there's a term where I come from 'people have a want in them '( I think really it's a sort of violent psychosis )
Don't want to say any more it makes me sick and depresses me.
A lot of people aren't like that just some are.

They need something to teach them what will happen if they don't care for it .
I just can't see the point in getting them ,to me you should treat them like children -you wouldn't just leave your children in the garden and go off to the supermarket .I don't like leaving mine !,sometimes forced to Leave the house.

I don't call them "furbabies" but I understand the concept and agree :)

But really my cats are more like little furry aliens who live with me. We communicate with each other and we love each other... more as equals, though.

Friends.
