I would like to get a hammer push it down the phone line and smash the voice that says this
 
I just scream "AGENT!" as long as it takes to get automated systems to turn me over to a live human being. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. o_O
 
Another thing that seriously winds me up is people who say "We'll ring you back" purely to get you off the line so they can get on with their work, SO annoying, especially when it's painfully obvious they have NO intention of actually ringing me back.

I've never come across one in the UK that can be 'interrupted'

Some of the ones in the usa are a dream in comparison. Interrupt even when the voice is still talking - brilliant.

And there often more options for an automatic call back.

But as you can see in my picture : I'm dead now. So I'm less bothered.
 
They certainly 'understand' like a recorded message.
I think it depends on who you talk to! it's not really customer service !it's just sell you something ! whoever decides on the dialogue is not realistic !I enquired about a product because there were no dimensions ,there was no mention of the fact in their answering email that it was extremely inefficient to have to ask them for dimensions when they should've been on the page .
 
It's the awful music they play that gets to me, and endless messages repeating the same thing over and over again. The music is supposed to calm you or make waiting pleasant, but in fact it does just the opposite because it's so awful. Then when you get connected, you explain what you want in detail, then they tell you that actually, they are not the person you need to speak to and please will I wait while they connect me, so I have to wait and then explain all over again... grrr!
