Problems Spending Money

Hello,

My Dad is a 45 year old Aspie, I am posting this for him as he needs some assistance with something that has been bothering him.

He has never been very good with managing money, but recently, the last few years, he has noticed he can accumulate lots of money, but his brain only allows him to spend small amounts, randomly. In a way, he is saving but doesn't want to! It has become a major source of frustration for him, especially as Christmas is coming up and he can't contribute much to any presents.

My Dad would like to know if anyone else on this site has a similar problem and he is desperate to know if this is to do with his aspergers, or something totally different.

He has also looked around on the Internet for answers, but only finds Aspies with problems spending TOO much money. My Dad feels very isolated in this situation, and feels as if the problems is progressing over time.

Thanks,
Latifah (I am awaiting a diagnosis for Aspergers) :D

Looks to me that he might be managing his money far better than he (or you) thinks. Does he have positive net worth? A high credit rating?

I think here you'll find Aspies are all over the map in terms of personal finance abilities and issues.

Maybe your Dad really likes money so much, he hoards money :P

He can consider give out $30 vouchers in Macy's, Sears, Kmart or Target.

My answer: it's quite plausible.

Does he put his money in a bank or is he hoarding it in his mattress? The former is just fine but the latter needs some help.

Also, there's a truth that everyone needs to know: acquiring stuff rarely acquires happiness. Maybe he's at that level of thinking and just doesn't know it.

I really find it difficult to buy things. If I'm spending money on anything other than inexpensive food or rent, my brain becomes really nervous. However, in my case, I earn very little so frugality is a matter of necessity. I do like to donate to reputable charities (such as Food for the Poor) when I have enough money to do so.
