Programming on a Chromebook?

Topic.

I am aware of Google, I use it daily.

I am wondering if it's possible to use something like an HTML editor or even Unity on a Chromebook PC?

I am currently learning Unity on my Digital Arts course, and would like to try and further my learning in my own time, but I don't have a Windows PC or a Mac.

I just searched HTML editor for chromebook and BAM, it gave me the answer! I then typed in Unity on a chromebook and again got the answer in seconds!

Ugh, Google fanboys are the worst, and what were the results?

So after an attempted insult, you expect me to provide you with the same answers you could have found yourself in a couple of minutes at the most!

For your information I use DuckDuckGo, although I imagine any search engine would provide the answers if one were to make the minimal effort needed to actually do the search Rich.

You bleat about my "attempted insult", and then proceed to insult ME about a "2 minute" Google search? Hypocrite much? Contrary to popular belief I have a LIFE beyond the Internet.

Does it involve 3D or anything graphics intensive? If so, you might want to consider something more powerful than a Chromebook for development. It should work in theory, but IMO if you're doing game development then having the proper hardware for it works out much better.

And about the HTML part...are you planning to write raw HTML or what? You can do that from any text editor, and if it helps, one that supports highlighting. Plenty of programs out there if you do a search on Google.

I believe that since the OP indicated he was familiar with
google/search engines in general, the comment that it
didn't take long to find answers by using the search phrases
"HTML editor for chromebook" and "Unity on a chromebook"
should be understood to be informative and not meant as a
soul scathing insult.

The constant "Use Google" posts without even half attempting to help are what's annoying @tree,

There have been no members in this thread suggesting that
you use google. You are seeing "google fanboys" where
there are none.

Anyway, have you tried accessing the search engine of your choice
using the pertinent terms? ("HTML editor for chromebook" and "Unity on a chromebook")

Perhaps the OP is asking the wrong question. Instead of going through agony over attempting to find applications or plugins to accommodate the very limited Chromebook OS, why not run a version of Linux on top of or dual-booted from Chromebook to begin with?

Using Crouton I'd load Ubuntu Linux on top of, or dual-booted to the Chrome OS.

Then one could run more software not so limited by the Chromebook OS itself. Lots of sources out there on this subject with rather precise instructions. Besides, Linux seems like the perfect solution to running various developer software that requires being cognizant of multiple OS platforms and web browsers.

Of course all this is relative to the technical prowess of a person making such a conversion.

If your Chromebook is up to spec you can even install Windows 10 on it instead, although it can be a pita. Also unfortunately a Windows 10 licence isn't free although you don't have to activate immediately, there are obviously ways around that, but I won't recommend anything illegal. You could of course install Linux instead such as Ubuntu, that is legitimately free (I notice someone already mentioned this).

If you're not very computer literate I also wouldn't recommend it, especially Windows 10 as a lot could go wrong (E.g. driver issues) and it's at your own risk. You may not want to attempt this, but if it was myself I'd hate all the restrictions of being forced to use Chrome OS.
