Rebellion

Do you see yourself as being a rebel? I do, but in an offbeat way. When I was a kid growing up in an extremely religiously conservative town everyone went to church but I loved listening to the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and the Dead Kennedy. I was obsessed with creating the loudest car stereo system in the school and went around talking about woofers and equalizer.s. i would drive through the school parking lot with the Ramones cranked up so loud it most likely damaged my eardrums while people stared. Thing was: it wasn't rebellion but the music that made me do that. I loved punk rock so much i didn't care if people thought I was a freak, and building a car stereo was awesome. But it was the music I loved and not the rebellion.

LOL. Someone once referred to me as a "closet rebel", much like the character portrayed by actor Jeff Daniels in "Something Wild". A friend who also knew my uh..."exotic" girlfriend at the time. We all worked in the same office. Which may have had something to do with it.

Not sure if I truly agree, but was amused by the analogy. Maybe due to growing up as a child in an oppressive household. Though I still recall the moment when I told my military father that I had no intention of getting a haircut. Let's just say on occasion I can certainly surprise people.

Tom Cruise's character "Maverick" I can wrap my head around. I am no fighter pilot, for sure, but that scene where he is in the Admiral's office. The scene where the Admiral is rapping off all Maverick's accomplishments, "....distinguished, distinguished, distinguished,...and yet you cannot get a promotion." "Why is that?" The Admiral goes on to say how he is a dying breed, that all pilots will be replaced in the future. Maverick's reply, "But not today." I see a lot of myself in that character, albeit within the context of being a team leader, mentor, and instructor for all the younger therapists. I've done some crazy things, things that weren't the "standard of care", and they worked. They worked well. I've made a difference in people's lives. I am happy not to get the promotions because, like Maverick, I like what I am doing now. I also know, like all those fighter pilots will be replaced with supersonic fighting drones, all those therapists will be replaced with AI controlled healthcare robots, and it will happen sooner than anyone is willing to imagine.

I do everythinkg by the book.
Everythinkg I do is via social convention. <irony>

The funny thing is, my illusion of being a non-conformist may simply be due to a symptom of having ADHD, I have read recently.
Luckily, I have no perceptible ego, and I am fine with the possibility.

Lol I think of myself as a non conformist too, but really I'm quite a dweeb. Also i think autism itself can be non-conforming--,we think differently so non conforming.
