Recently Diagnosed [Adult]

Hi,

I guess I'm "new," insofar as I've been recently diagnosed as a 30-something adult (I don't feel like an adult... and my wife was like "duh!" after she learned of the diagnosis, although, she didn't say "duh" since she's really, really smart. it wasn't a surprise, is what i mean...)... married, have 2 daughters, love software and technology and gadgets and... the internet.

Which I suppose makes a lot of sense (the last interest) as more people on the internet will know about my diagnosis now than the amount of fingers that I have (both hands, to be specific). Not even my parents know yet.

So, hi. I'm learning. A lot. About who i am and what all this means. I'm excited, nervous... all of the above? I'd love for any great books, resources, websites, etc. if you have any... i'll unfortunately read them all if you post something so... don't post too much stuff...

One of my undying passions and fascinations and compulsions is writing. I do not consider myself to be a writer... i just write, a lot. I'm sharing some of my journey on a blog... which I hope is in my signature, but i'll have to double-check after I hit "submit" here... although, maybe not... maybe this post needs to be "approved" first... drat, I forget.

Ok, that is all.

Welcome Creative Aspie, Hope you enjoy your stay here. there are lots of information you can find online. I will come back and post a few (so as to not overload you :)) I know I was unofficially diagnosed by my aunt and mom for like 8 or so years before I ever decided to read anything about Aspergers. then finally last year, like February or something, I finally decided to see what it really meant in my life.

Welcome Creativeaspie. I have been recently going through the same thing as you. It is worth it. You can search around the forum for some of my prior comments on receiving a diagnosis. It's a big deal.

As for resources: I think it's quite nearly a universal opinion that Tony Attwood's 'Complete Guide to Aspergers' is one of the best sources. I cannot recommend it enough.

Other than that I would recommend just about any book on the subject matter that's been published and recognized. The biggest thing to remember is that it's a spectrum with people of varying abilities. No one resource will apply with 100% certainly - so reading several is a good idea.

I would also recommend John Michael Carly's book "Aspergers from the Inside Out" - Like us, he was a later diagnosis with marriage and family. Having dealt and struggled with these issues throughout life it was refreshing, for me, to read someone that developed many of the same coping skills. There were lots of A HA moments.

Hi Creativeaspie! Welcome to Aspies Central. I haven't read Attwood's book but I would definitely recommend it based on what I've heard about it. I also agree with Rhubarbo about reading as many resources as you can because the definitions will vary (I've been coming to the conclusion that many things related to AS are not set in stone because definitions are always changing based on decisions made in the medical field, the field of psychology, and changing public perceptions of AS).

I also hope you enjoy everything we have to offer here. An fyi: I like to call this wonderful community a close-knit family because we are always there for one another. So feel free to post often if you have any questions, concerns, or anything you would like to say. We value every insight provided on this forum.
