Remembering Names

I'm ok at remembering names, it's faces I can't remember. The other day someone sent me a picture of King Charles dressed in a silly costume and only his face showing, and I didn't know who it was.

I’m actually the opposite. I can remember someone’s face really good. I can recognize someone from years back, but I can’t get the name. I hate it I try so hard and still forget. :weary:

I remember faces pretty well, unless it’s someone I’ve only seen once or twice.
I do sometimes forget names though.

Sometimes I’ll be having a conversation with someone I don’t know well, and then get nervous because I can’t remember their name but I’m too embarrassed to ask.

I’ll get embarrassed too! I’ll overthink like oh no I bet people think I think less of them when I don’t. I really like to remember characteristics I think over a name. I like to imagine that’s how my brain works.

I tend to struggle equally with faces and names, especially when I'm encountering someone (or as it usually happens, someone encounters me) in an context/situation that I wouldn't expect to encounter them, and it's been some time since I've last seen them.

This gets really embarrassing at times when their opening line is something like "Hey Victor, remember me?" and I blank out, and they describe the context of how we know each other, and I'm still struggling. Quite often, it'll be a day or two later that it finally clicks for me, but of course then it's too late.

Weirdly enough, I can remember names really well and faces. I remember people that I never spoke to/they never spoke to me from primary school.

Ever meet someone who can remember everyone's name? Perhaps you haven't met this person for a long, long time, and they just seem to immediately remember your name? A simple trick that is often taught in business and marketing classes when you meet someone.

1. They tell you their name. "Hello, my name is Mark." Now, here is the trick.:
2. You greet them by repeating their name back to them. "Nice to meet you, Mark." (Perhaps shaking their hand). Then, tell them your name. "My name is Thomas."
3. During your conversation. Instead of using pronouns (you, him/her, etc), replace it with their actual name, "Mark", whenever you can. "So, Mark, where are you from?"

For most people, the simple act of saying OUTLOUD their name, 1,2,3 times during a short interaction will allow you to remember their name.

Im pretty good at names but i struggle with faces. I remember people better by their hairstyle. Glasses and stuff that makes the face more distinct help though. When i was on a flight recently three of the flight attendents had the same hairstyle and colour so i couldnt tell them apart.

That sounds a lot smoother than my normal method of peppering the conversation with "so... What was your name again?" at random intervals.

I’m terrible at remembering names. I have always been like that ever since I was a kid. I feel so bad that I have to ask people their names multiple times to remember it. I found this cool article breaking down the logic for why it can be hard to remember peoples names. I thought it was educational, so I wanted to share it.

Me too! I remember certain people's names but not others. It's nothing to worry yourself about. I know for me it feels like I'm being disrespectful, but I know it's really not my fault. Sometimes if it gets awkward or someone says "you can't remember so and so's name and if been here for like 3 months?" I change the focus by using humor and say something like, "I don't even remember what my own name is sometimes". Even though that's not true they laugh and move on to another subject. I remember your name daisyrose

I have a steel trap memory and can vividly recall things like I am right back there. I can travel somewhere and remember exactly how to get back. I feel like it's just one of my hyperfocus areas, really. I definitely have flaws in several other areas of my brain thingy.

I just say "hey" and start talking, before they can react and say hey is for horses or something.

I need my "memory exercise" to keep my from forgetting all kinds of things. But yeah, especially names.

So whenever I sense I have forgotten something I recite (in no particular order or concern):

Gary Collins, "The Sixth Sense"
Jena Malone
Nicole Kidman
Karl Rove
Cilantro
Coriander

For some weird reason sometimes I struggle having to recall Nicole Kidman's name. When I can always recall her present husband Keith Urban. Yet I have no interest in his music. Go figure.

I'm genuinely curious, but do you think this is something Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) related, or completely independent from that.

Like apparently a lot of people here, I can't remember names. Or faces. Or even a shopping list of more than 4 items. Yet, I can remember detailed techical informationand concepts, and have vivid memories of things (verifiable) that happened when I was 3 years old. Go figure.

Not at all. I see my own short term memory issues as being directly attributed to advancing age.

Luckily they seem confined to unimportant trivia. The sort of thing I can afford to lose track of compared to critical things most people need to recall on a more regular basis. So I try to keep track of these unimportant bits of trivia just to keep my short term memory from turning into mush.

Still it irritates me at times when I see a face and can't instantly match a name to it. But at least it eventually comes to me. Probably because I choose to hang onto such things like a dog with a bone...lol.
