Retro RPG games are so addictive

Well, the retro games for the Nintendo and Super Nintendo systems as well as game boy and newer versions like color, advance and DS as I haven't played the newer ones yet.

I'm currently playing Final Fantasy Mystic Quest as there was an extremely creepy moment in Chrono Trigger that's really scared me a little. It's just after Chrono goes looks for Marle (I think that's her name) in the past and comes across that creepy cathedral with the demons disguised as humans or cannibals :/

I had a dumb moment in mystic quest where I couldn't get past the first room in the wintry cave because I had no idea how to open the doors. I guess I should've realized that the 'L' and 'R' buttons had a purpose in the game lol At least I got to level up a lot. I thought I had to be a certain level to get pass room F1 :P

There's also other's I've tried like the Dragon Quest series. I do wonder if Dragon Ball Z wasn't based on the RPG genre because if you've played any RPG game for the SNES then you'd notice how similar the series is to the games. I did see Akira Toriyama's name in the credits of some games after all lol

I absolutely love the Pokemon series for the Game Boy Advance and remember always borrowing my kid brother's Pokemon games and playing them for hours lol :D

There's something about doing things over and over again that I really like and powering up my Pokemon levels.

What's your favorite RPG game and are you a junkie or do you have your addiction under control ? :P

I have this exact same problem. I think my favourite RPG of all time is Final Fantasy IV. I'm mostly addicted to Final Fantasy games specifically but I also find Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and Lost Odyssey very addictive too.

Akira Toriyama was the character designer/art director/something like that for the Dragon Quest series wasn't he? I don't know why but I've never tried those games before. Maybe I should. My cousin recommended that I try the Grandia series, too.

I always thought of Chrono Trigger as more a hack than a game Lol I mean the way it took advantage of the Super Nintendo's hardware capabilities and I believe it was even advanced for it's day :D Too bad the graphics of the games for the N64 weren't nearly as good as CT's graphics ... I still think a lot of the games for the super Nintendo even had better graphics than most games for the N64 :/

I think Akira Toriyama did do the character design for DQ :D I think you'll love it personally. I mostly play games in emulators after finding the game ROM'S online. I also like to use tools sort of dig around inside them and change the graphics or text in the game lol

SNES and original Game Boy being "vintage"? Oh, my friends, I'm only at the tender age of 27; don't make me start feeling old now! ;)

For those who love the nostalgia of old games, I recommend checking out this site: GOG.com

GOG is a company that takes old games, buys the rights to reproduce and re-sell games legally, makes the game compatible with new OSs, and then sells them for extremely reasonable prices :)

Cool. I found at least six of them that I made official product websites for many years ago. My favorite job... :)

You don't start feeling old until you start developing bald spots on your head :P Lol These games now-a-days XD Yay, I was rewarded for moving my player foreword even though that could've been explained in the game manual :D Also is it me or is the challenge gone ? It used to be when you died during a level, you had no choice but start all over again. Plus you only had a few lives or chances, now it seems there's no such thing as a game over :/

I wonder if they'd be able to sell an Indy game I created ? Thanks for the link :D

Yep, i think good 2D graphics like Chrono Trigger beat poor 3D graphics any time. There are a few decent looking games on the N64, but it seems like the majority of them suffer from blurry textures, "fog" which makes it hard to see where you're going, and a choppy frame rate, to varying extents.

I use emulators/ROMs sometimes, but usually that just makes me want to play the games on something closer to the original hardware. I just got a Nintendo Wii, which has Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, the first 3 US Final Fantasy games, some Phantasy Star games (Sega's answer to Final Fantasy), and "Final Fantasy IV: The After Years" among other things on the Virtual Console/WiiWare. I will probably download them all at some point - I have the classic controller which reminds me of the SNES controller a lot. I haven't seen any of the old Dragon Quest games on the Wii shop channel though (I know the early games were renamed "Dragon Warrior" outside of Japan). Much like Final Fantasy, PAL regions didn't get any of the early games in the series. The first one that was released here was Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2 in 2006, and I wasn't actually aware of that until I just checked now.

I only liked the older games. Anything newer than the first NES I just totally lost interest. They got too realistic looking and weren't like a game anymore, at least to me. I haven't played in years but I think my fav was Super Mario 2. Also liked Legend of Zelda, Blaster Master, Tetris, Dr Mario. But that was still new stuff because I also had a Coleco Vision with 30+ games with the steering wheel piece. I liked Destructor (which used the steering wheel piece) and Mousetrap (which used inlays under the controller buttons), and of course Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Dig Dug, Space Invaders.

Look in to getting the Hyperkin and trying retro famicom games too!!

I've gotten back into RPGs after picking up my 3DS again. The eShop has a few goodies, and they add more every few weeks. I just wish they'd put SNES titles on there too.

Retro RPGs are pretty much the only thing I play. I love Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest (I've played them all except 1,2,and 7), Final Fantasy (1-6 only, I don't like the modern ones), the Golden Sun Series, Lunar Legend (on the gba), Pokemon, Paper Mario (all except Sticker Star, I HATE that one), Super Mario RPG, Mario and Luigi series, and Earthbound (can't wait for Mother 4!).

Anyone else here hoping for a western release of Dragon Quest 7 on the 3ds?

Chrono Trigger is hands down the best classic RPG. If aspies ruled the world I would imagine it would look a lot like 12,000 B.C, a high technological civilization mixed with ancient ruins.

I remember renting a NES and Final Fantasy 1 & having to return it before we finished. Then we got both for Xmas and redid it fast to where we left off. That first one was pretty addictive. Went thru 1-5 Dragon Warriors. There was a Samurai or Ancient Chinese based game, maybe called Destiny of the Emperor that was fun too.

I kept most of the original stuff that we had passed along in-family including two NES systems with those orange ray gun things. Duck Hunt Woof Woof! But people asked for them years ago. Maybe it was my own kids lol. I keep their early stuff too waiting for that call... "Dad send the PS2 overnight!" etc

I'm working through that at the moment
It's amazing that it escaped my notice for so long, because I'm loving it!
There is.......nothing quite like that game :tonguewink:
One of my top three favorites! The only reason I ever knew it existed was a long time ago a family we used to hang around had the game. Only in the past year or two did I ever hear of another playing the game. It likes to hide, it seems.
