Returning from a break

Hello 2023,
Apologies for my absence from many years ago and my diagnosis then. You were all very supportive and I’ve been adjusting and coping well - the small but relevant accommodations I make have had a huge positive impact- but now I’ve two new challenges that I can’t solve (being Aspergers!!) !

My eldest daughter is getting into her teens and to me - developing very clearly as an Aspergers individual- our family flow and accommodations for me also help her considerably over the past years.

Problem 1: wife is hell bent on her never getting assessed.
Problem 2: from what I’ve learned over the years and how I cope with my Aspergers and what works best for my relationship with my wife, and recently having to go through her school past - it’s more obvious than the sun in the sky that she needs a diagnosis ASAP.

She was against my diagnosis too, and she would never explain why (how to confuse an aspie !) yet nothing but good has come from it for my and our families wellbeing - and also my work and social life. All are so so much better.

What advice and reassuring can I give my daughter (as a Dad) that she’s doing ok socially and teenagers are (obviously) cruel and fickle beings? What worked for your autistic daughters and their social angst?

And any tips for coping with the anti-autist autist in the family - who says she’s done the reading and the living experience holiday for real (thats true!)…? Oh she’s also pre-menopausal - so mega-anxious and in denial about taking HRT too. Someone said to write to their Dr and lodge a concern ?

Hit me up - what do you know ?

Thank you
Marcus

Welcome back!

One book that I liked and that I think might be helpful for you to read (as a parent and to understand potential support strategies) and for your daughter for herself, if she is on the spectrum (or even if not, there's lots of good general information) is

https://www.autismforums.com/resour...uide-how-to-grow-up-awesome-and-autistic.205/
Some jurisdictions provide funding for diagnosis and supports for minors but not adults, and if you live in such a place, then it's really to everyone's advantage to seek diagnosis as soon as possible, especially given there may be a lengthly waitlist.

Thank you VictorR, book ordered !
Not sure how to share it with her as she’s not diagnosed or considering herself as such, and the wife is as ever - not on board with Neurodiversity, so I’ll do the reading and hopefully be able to share and coach her with ideas and support from the sidelines for now.
Excellent recommendation - thank you !
