Romania’s new Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă apologized Friday for labeling some Romanian members of the European Parliament as “autistic.”
Dăncilă “apologizes publicly for the statement made during a televised broadcast and states that [she did not] want to offend people with autism spectrum disorders,” said a Romanian government statement.
In her first TV interview since becoming prime minister at the end of January, the former Social Democrat MEP attacked some of her ex-colleagues for speaking out against Romania in the Parliament. “These people disinform. They know the reality, but they don’t want to accept it and don’t want to see it. I believe these people are autistic and don’t see and don’t hear what is obvious for all those in good faith,” she said.
Dăncilă was responding to a question about whether the Social Democrat government she leads — as the third prime minister from her party in a year — wants to push Romania away from the EU and the West.
The Association of Parents with Autistic Children on Friday said the prime minister’s statement was offensive, according to Digi24.
The association said Dăncilă was not the first politician to use the term autism in a negative way in political fights. “This is very worrying and shows the level of politicians’ understanding of autism and the issues of people with this condition,” it said.
In the government statement on Friday, Dăncilă said she strongly supported people with disabilities and promised to get closely involved in government policies to help them.
The Romanian National Council to Fight Discrimination, a government agency, said it had opened an inquiry into the prime minister’s statement and will speak to her next week. The moderator of the TV show will also be interviewed, the authority said.
Dăncilă is not the first Romanian prime minister who has had to apologize for controversial statements of late. Her predecessor, Mihai Tudose, sparked a spat with Budapest after he made a veiled threat to hang members of the country’s Hungarian minority. He apologized after his resignation, but said his statement had been misinterpreted.
