Sadistic soldiers jailed over savage attack on deaf and autistic teenagers on night out

Two sadistic soldiers who brutally beat up two disabled teenagers "for entertainment", leaving one of them in a coma, have been put behind bars.

Bullies Jason Furguson, 18, and John Ward, 19, were on a drunken night out when they targeted a 16-year-old deaf boy with autism and his 18-year-old autistic friend.

The two vulnerable youngsters, described by a court as "naive, trusting and innocent", believed the two squaddies from an army camp near their Welsh home village were just being friendly.

But the pair were lured into a trap in a dark alley where they were called "spastic" and "mongol" as they were beaten up for fun.

The soldiers were on a night out from their Army camp at Sennybridge in the Brecon Beacons when they saw the "vulnerable" pair walking home together.

A court heard they began verbally abusing the pair, filming the insults on one of their phones, before taking their victim's mobile phone to lead two young boys into the alley.

The youngest was beaten and kicked unconscious by Ferguson as his terrified friend was held back by Ward.

Prosecutor Sue Ferrier described it as a "shocking and sustained beating" which left him in a coma for three days.

His older friend was then punched, kicked and hit with a terracotta pot from a nearby house.

But he managed to escape home to get help - leaving a trail of blood on the street as he fled.

Miss Ferrier said: "What happened beggars belief.

"They were unlucky enough to cross the paths of these men who had been drinking all night and were heavily intoxicated.

"Their two victims were targeted. They were identified because of their particular vulnerabilities.

"They led sheltered lives. They were particularly naive.

"They did not appreciate they were being lined up with what was to follow - a brutal and sadistic attack."

The soldiers burned their clothing in woodland before heading back to camp after the attack in July of last year.

Ferguson, who hid under a truck when military police began looking for him, admitted two counts of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Ward, of Oakley, Fife, admitted wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and unlawful wounding.

John Ryan, defending, said had of Ferguson: "He has brought shame on the Army and apologises for that."

Ferguson was sentenced to eight years and eight months in a young offender institution and Ward was handed seven years at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.

Judge Daniel Williams told them: "You saw those boys as entertainment and you saw their differences as reason to torment and bully them and beat them unconscious.

"Ferguson asked if one was Down syndrome. He has Asperger's and that was enough for him to be labelled as a mongol.

"Ward was complicit. You said that you could see a good fight between Ferguson and the spastic.

"With him unconscious he was no fun anymore so you turned your attention to his friend. It was a chilling and sadistic attack.

"There was gratuitous degradation. Miraculously, there was no long term physical injury."

So, so angry at this

I grew up in a place where violence like this was common place, where so many children were taught from a very young age to hate vulnerability, to hate naivete, to hate innocent gullibility, hate with a passion everything that had been beaten out of them themselves.

of course when you are on the spectrum those qualities don't get beaten out, so we shine like beacons of everything they absolutely loathe and hate about themselves with a terrifying passion.

Absolutely appalling. My friend's brother who had learning difficulties, Asperger's and schizophrenia was targeted like this by work 'colleagues'. He worked in a large bakery and they ambushed him on the way home. This was nearly twenty years ago now but things are getting worse....

i am so sorry to hear this. people can be such dicks. how dare they.

Disgusting. They got a just serving in the end for their horrible behaviour. You'd think the army would have taught them better.

These men have dishonoured the Armed Forces and deserve their sentences although had it been down to me I would have doubled their prison tariff at the least.

And if they are American they better prepare their buttholes before they go to jail... If you abuse vulnerable people or children many prisoners will see you like the people who abused them!
