salt crystals under the lens

In my post on Microscopy, Jeff T reminded of my childhood salt crystal experiments, so I attempted to replicate the results.

These are my salt crystal pics. Here is the crystal, unaltered, on high magnification:

Notice that it looks a bit like a step pyramid. This is caused by the salt crystalizing into a cube shape, as the drop of water on the slide evaporates, causing "steps" to form.

I'm going to play with these filters:

The one that looks like a steering wheel changes the angle that the light travels, creating shadows that allow one to see surface features easily. Here are two different versions:
