I have never really been good at saying Hello to new people- it seems a lot easier on line.
- you don't have look at the way they are dressed, the way they are looking at you, the way they stand, what kind of background they are from- are they judging you by the way you talk/look/smell etc.
- What you actually type out is about all you've got to go on.- also you can take your time to type what you are going to say and you don't have to worry about undesired accents/stuttering/lisps etc if you have the misfortune to have any of these problems.-also if you are from outerspace /a robot/ or a person with a grotesque physical problem it doesn't really matter.
The one thing in common is somehow we have an interest in Asperger's & Autism.
My son Liam was diagnosed about 3 years ago with mild Autism-Being on the ASD spectrum- the diagnosis took nearly three years to happen. I obviously wanted to learn everything about the subject in an attempt to be a clewed up dad- it wasn't very helpful that my X did not what to engage in learning anything about the subject-in fact the first I heard of the word Aspergers was from a teacher at my son's school-(He had stopped coming to see me on visits but his mother had told me nothing about what was going on at school-the fact that he'd had a couple of melt-downs etc meant that he was under observation and awaiting diagnosis with a children's pychologist.)
Anyway I am still trying to get a diagnosis for myself as I can see a lot of similarities of what I was like at his age - however I seemed to get a grips with the tantrums eventually- having two parents and a brother who was older probably helped alot.
So I am now 50 years of age- I have a Ph.D in Plant Biochemistry/Physiology and currently trying to get back into full time employment- (I have been away from scientific research for a number of years due to a multitude of personal family problems- however even though I haven't published any scientific papers for a number of years I also have not Perished (PUBLISH or PERISH was something I remember when I was working in a lab).
I am currently working for nothing at a registered charity (NPO) which tries to help get peoples problems sorted out (Housing/employment etc /filling in forms/ food banks/etc). However I play a bit of music on the street when I need to (Hence the name Busker Steve- guitar/recorder/mouthorgan -obviously not all at the same time)
So I thought joining the ASPIEScentral Forum would help me greatly in understanding Aspergers/Autism in general-Its good to know you're not alone in the world.
I hope thats enough background to "Break the Ice"- and
