Found a video in my YouTube feed of an animation of a person shooting themself and I cannot get it out of my head. It makes me cry and gives me intrusive thoughts.

That‘s terrible. Keep breathing. It’s okay to have a strong reaction to something so upsetting. Better to get the tears out and talk about it than keep it all inside.

Remember that the thoughts are just thoughts and the more we fear having them, the more power they have.

Your brain’s alarm system is going off to warn you. It‘s like a fire alarm that is too reactive to heat and it goes off when there is no fire. But you can tell it, “Thank you brain, but I got this. This isn’t real, I don’t need your help here.”

I’m sad you are going through this. I understand completely.

I have the same problem. Sometimes I see something on tv and it just rattles me to my core. What works best me is to find someone else to watch (usually over and over and over) that hits all of the good parts of my brain until there’s no space left to hang onto the bad one. The nasty memories always return but they become more and more distant over time, usually a couple of days. And the worst thing I can do in this situation is to do any kind of meditation. Peace and quiet just mean I’ll be thinking of nothing but what I watched that was disturbing.

Things like that can really stick with me too, Mysterionz. I don't have an answer, but you do have friends here. I hope you feel better soon. I haven't had weird things on my profile page in a while :)

Yes, l get sad over roadkill. I think oh sad, l hope this animal didn't suffer pain. I can't stomach pain happening to animals. It's hard. Child abuse is another tough one for me to stomach, l want to scold parents being mean to their children, but l don't. Especially if they are yelling at a small child. I try to smile at the child, and lift their spirits. I also hate to see older people struggling. That's tough for me. I believe it's my sole purpose to try to empower others on days l an not doing the same for myself. Lol But there are limitations with this

Seems everyone has their own unique triggers that set this off.

I've seen so much horror content at this point that what you describe would not even set off any emotion at all.

But on the other hand... problematic videos involving dogs or cats?

Nope. Nope, nope, nope. I'm done, I'm out, bye now, time for anything else...

I've found that the best thing to do when this sort of thing is not just to watch something else instead, but to watch something that is guaranteed to give you a laugh. Something funny.

I've got a couple of Youtubers who I'm subscribed to that are particularly hilarious to me, and if I get really bothered by something, I go to their channels and watch whatever to knock me out of it. You're basically striking the problem with its direct opposite. If you can, try to specifically seek out channels like that, who you can subscribe to... so they're in your list for easy access... and then when you run into bad stuff, that means you can quickly click over to good stuff without having to search or scroll.

I suppose that'd be my advice.

What I find particularly disturbing are the legislators demonizing trans people, or using religion as a weapon to limit our thoughts or behaviors.

Yes, and suicide is one for me too. I remember when I was a child, and I watched Rurouni Kenshin after school, I was always shocked at the scenes of samurai committing seppuku. As an adult, I don't find suicide scenes less shocking, even if it's animation...
