The iconic children's show has tackled autism head on with a new video featuring Julia, a young muppet on the spectrum who "sometimes does things differently"

Sesame Street has unveiled its first character with autism through a series of animated short films.

A new clip featuring popular muppets Elmo and Abby Cadabby meeting Julia, a young autistic muppet, has been widely praised online.

Voiced by a girl on the autistic spectrum , Julia is first seen sitting on a swing next to Elmo humming to herself.

When Abby arrives and says hello to Julia, she smiles and walks away without acknowledging her.

Elmo then explains to Abby: “Julia sometimes does things differently because Julia has autism.”

Elmo advises Abby to use fewer words when talking to Julia, and waiting a little longer for her response.

The three then play I Spy together.

The two minute clip is one of 13 new videos forming part of the " Sesame Street and Autism: See amazing in all children" initiative.

The video's simple and touching message has struck a chord with viewers on YouTube , with many of the comments praising the film coming from people with autism.

Jonathan Pinzon wrote: "I was like her when I was little! I did had autism and still today, I'm proud to be different!"

And CCharlie Angel wrote: "As difficult as it is to capture this condition, this feature by our friends at Sesame Street really does a commendable job.

"Autism is difficult for us living with it in our lives to understand. I know it is difficult to even try to explain it to those not affected by it. This feature provides a "digestible bite" for the typical community."

The introduction of Julia is the latest attempt by Sesame Street to discuss and educate young people about autism.

In 2014, the Sesame Workshop released a video featuring Abby Cadabby and Autism Speaks founders Bob and Suzanne Wright.
