First time Hunter Heartbeat Method to debut in the US
Loren Wendelburg has autism. He wants to be a professional actor. And he's one of the many kids who will be taking part in this weekend's Shakespearean Hunter Heartbeat Method clinic.
Heart of America Shakespeare is bringing in Kelly Hunter with the Flute Theater for a three day workshop on her heartbeat method, the first time its debuted in the US. The method is a way for autistic kids to learn The Bard using the thump of a heartbeat.
"It's the first sound a child hears, because they hear their mothers heartbeat. So, it's a comfort. Kelly Hunter always starts all of her teaching programs or games she's developed specifically for teaching social skills with the heartbeat rhythm," Lisa Wendelburg, Loren's mother, tells KMBZ.
The workshop teaches kids social skills, like recognizing emotions from facial expressions and giving them valuable personal interactions, using Shakespeares dramatic lines.
Loren showed off his skills with a rhymthic line: "Now is the winter of our discontent."
"I feel like I become more confident. When I get on stage, I feel like I can do anything," he told KMBZ.
The workshop will be held January 7-9th at Heart of America Shakespeare in Kansas City. Its free for children ages 9-16 with an autism spectrum diagnosis, with a limit of 30 kids. There are still a few spots available. You can apply here.
