Shopping @ thrift stores

Where I'm from, North America, we call these stores "thrift stores". In Europe, they're called "charity stores".

But no matter what part of the world you're in, you will be FLOORED as to what you can find in each store.

So, with that said, who here are avid 'thrifters'? I am one of those people. I have found so many wonderful things for so little, like most items in my sports jersey/cap collection. I always look like I paid more!

Tell us some of the stuff you have found at such stores.

I used to frequent them once in a while looking for old things I collected. It was rare to find something, but when you did it was at a great price. I also monitored an online charity auction site (like ebay) when I was actively hunting.

Here they’re called Brocki. :D I’ve found some good stuff over the years. I make costumes as a hobby but sometimes it’s easier or necessary to get items that are already clothes than make them. Like I’m not making a denim jacket. So best find were TWO denim jackets for two different costumes. In the normal shops it was about 45-70 chf for something that would be painted, adjusted etc. I also found a hat to use for a costume too. So it was quite a good win.

When I began living independently and not earning much, these stores allowed me to furnish a house better than I could have buying retail.

Where I live, they are called "Resale Shops" and frequently
associated with Food Pantries.

I have amassed a large stash of fabric by going to my favorite
resale shop, buying clothing when it's $1.25 a bag, and then
taking the clothing apart.

I bought my little box home and then was too broke to buy furniture. Our store gets a lot of new stuff so l bought some beautiful pieces of furniture and rugs. Now it actually looks like a house. I feel very lucky. This reseller helps people with jobs which is so important.

When I was a teen I had to buy my own clothes from my babysitting money. Thankfully I lived in a resort town with dieing residents. I wore vintage from the 30s to the 50s when no one else did. Frocks and furs!

I regularly frequent a local flea market, I have friendships with several of the regular vendors...

I am mostly looking for collectibles when I go, as some of you know I collect vintage photos, sometimes whatever catches my eye, books sometimes

For certain clothing items I go to thrift stores, in particular I refuse to pay the full price at a store for a jacket... I have found lots of great jackets at thrift stores that cost me far less...

I never went to thrift stores much... I've zero interest in buying clothes and all the ones in this area seem to be pretty much just that.

But I used to go to garage sales a lot. Like, A LOT. Of course, those are even more erratic, but they're also way more varied.

I always like taking a look at the books available. Sometimes you find something neat. The shops can be interesting as sometimes you can get a "read" of the types of people who donate to a certain shop - as I can find that certain stores carry books and knick knacks that I like, and others... not so much.

I love these type of stores! I always shop at such stores looking for music boxes to add to my collection and also for clip on jewelry and other things I can use for drag performances.

We have different sorts - thrift stores, Goodwill, 2nd hand shops, habitat for humanities. I love going to these places. It's where I find most of my projects. Like turning a dresser into a desk and so on. You never know what you're gonna find.

They are called charity shops in the UK ,we don't call them stores ,the only place called that are the army and navy stores, that sold ex forces clothing \boots, then mass produced products for walking in different climates, there arent actually many businesses with the word store in the title.

I LOVE thrift stores.

I've gotten tons of books from there, those awesome vintage overcoats you see in old movies from the '40s, all kinds of things. My coffeemaker was from a thrift store, same with the electric skillet--and I managed to get an electric blender from like the '30s or '40s or something. It is massive and Art Deco and it works but it sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

If I had to pick the coolest thing I've ever gotten from a thrift shop, it would have to be this old wind-up record player. It had been sealed in its original carry case since probably the Coolidge Administration and was in almost perfect cosmetic condition, right down to the green woolen pad on the turntable. I fixed it up mechanically.

It's given very little trouble, mechanically, and has been quite simple to keep running. It has been the prize of my collection for four years.

I find adult diapers and other incontinence products sometimes, which is a double edged sword. On the other hand, I'm thrilled to get these and other personal care items for way cheaper than I can get them in stores. But usually when I find something like that in a thrift store, it means that someone passed away and the family just didn't want to throw unopened stuff away.

There are very few interesting things in thrift stores here anymore. Most of them simply sell clothes now, which I don't care about. Books have gone from interesting nonfiction finds to junk crime novels from the 2000s. Electronics are mostly just lots and lots of old stereo components and the occasional junk China made 2008 vintage GE clock radio. A long time ago thrift stores were really cool, old transistor radios, cool books. When I was a teen I found an old Nordmende Transita G transistor radio that looked like it had been through a Mad Max movie. Clipped out the rotted 6 battery C cell clip, wired in a 9 volt clip, and it worked. That went byebye long ago of course, wish I still had it.

I actually get a lot of things at thrift stores!
A lot of my clothes are secondhand or thrifted. I don't really care if my clothes are new or not, and some of the things you can find in thrift stores are really cool. I've gotten a few suit jackets for like $5. I get a lot of my clothes secondhand online too. Poshmark and Mercari are good for gently used clothes.

I love used bookstores! I have hundreds of books and a lot of them I got for about $3 to $5. My favorite is a brand new dog show book, signed by the author, that I got for $1.99 at Goodwill. The cashier had no idea how much it was actually worth lol... it didn't have a price tag so he was like "I'll give it to you for $1.99." It retails for $75!
It's on my bookshelf right now. I'll post a picture of it at some point. It's one of my very favorite books. And I found it completely by accident... it's definitely my best random find.

I collect dog figurines, which I've mentioned on here often. I've found a lot of cool ones at thrift stores.
There's one that I currently have that I'm going to repaint... he's supposed to be a Dalmatian, but it isn't accurate to a Dalmatian and everything about him looks more like a Pointer. So I'm going to paint him to look like my Pointer.
I have a lot of vintage Pointer figures in my collection now lol. I've posted some of Mr. Lemon Pointer, who is my favorite. I got him at an online thrift store.
My living room has kind of a vintage farmhouse theme so I have a lot of antiques in there that I have thrifted. I have a vintage dog tapestry above my TV... yes, also a Pointer. You'd never know that Dogo Argentinos are actually my favorite breed lol. But I have become the Crazy Pointer Lady.

And once again, I've just rambled about dogs  But you'd be surprised by how many cool vintage dog collectibles you can get in thrift shops.

I have gotten a few music boxes too, which I've posted a video of somewhere on here. My favorite one plays Silent Night, and I have it out all year round, even though it's technically a Christmas decoration lol.

So yeah, I love thrift stores!! :D
