Slavery was on the ballot yesterday, in 2024.

I was surprised to find the issue of slavery on the voting/ election ballot in California yesterday. It had to do with forced labor in prison and jails. Some places force inmates to work unpaid or low pay jobs. Noncompliance results in inmates being punished or them facing additional charges.
As a concept I support the idea of giving inmates tasks to do. That’s where I draw a line in my thinking. There are a lot of reasons our country has overcrowded jails. Bigger picture problems and legislation led to this overcrowding. Many folks in jail belong there but not all of them. Forcing inmates to work for companies that outsource labor to the prison system is wildly abusive in my opinion. I respect that lawmakers created something to stop forced labor and slavery in prisons.
It might be a hot take to say these things, what do you think?
