Something WEIRD happened while I was sleeping (again...)

Last night I was having a dream where I was walking back to my house after the sun was going down. For some reason I was walking back from town. When I got back and got up to my room I noticed there were strange portraits on my walls, I couldn't make out their faces. There were candles around me too, and I could smell them. Smelling, in a dream, Ikr? Anyway, for some reason I REALLY needed to lay down. So I did; I got under my weighted blanket, grabbed my Kirby plush, and tried to sleep, but I noticed this ringing in my head. It got louder and louder and louder, until finally it made me panic a little. It went from a ringing to a buzzing to straight up NOISE in my head, and I remember panting...

When I woke up, though... I still felt it. The dream felt so real; the candles, the portraits, I remember exactly where they were, and I should mention, the candles were the only light in the room. I couldn't understand why it was happening. Why any of it was happening. Was it a past life I had lived and I was reliving it's death? Did I go back in time or something?

You had a dream while you were sleeping.

If you want derive meaning from it, you could
try the Gestalt approach.

“You are the maker of the dream …
Whatever you put into the dream must be what is in you.”

[Fritz Perls]

See that's the thing though. The ringing felt so real and I heard myself huffing and puffing. That doesn't usually happen to me. Unless I somehow woke up in the middle of it?

Feeling that dream events are real is not an uncommon
dream experience. And rapid breathing as a response
to dream content isn't unusual either.

Sounds very much like what is referred to as a "hypnopompic hallucination". That point where one is emerging out of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and gradually waking towards complete consciousness.

Which can be anything from quite concerning to terrifying in some instances where your conscious mind cannot momentarily differentiate that point where you can separate the circumstances of your dream state, from the circumstances of consciousness.

Made worse sometimes when you are also experiencing sleep paralysis. Something I've experienced a few times myself. However with such concise explanations, if and when it happens, I'm able to easily just shrug it off. Even have a laugh about it at times. So can you, once you know what you are truly dealing with.

You can have any and all sensations in your dreams. Feeling those things in your dreams could be an indication of something you are feeling or have recently felt, and which your brain is still processing.

When you dream, your mind is in a state called Primary Process Thinking. It's a more primitive form of thought than conscious thought and it works mostly through analogies. So, if you are feeling anxious, you might dream of schedules, demands, etc. If you are feeling empowered, you might dream about flying. To understand your dreams, ignore the specific events and focus more on how you felt in your dream - then look for things that you are still processing that evoked the same feelings.

Sometimes when I sleep, I dream about events that have happened in my past, and then I wake up shocked that the event didn’t happen again.

Smelling in a dream is apparently possible, according to what I found here:
Can we smell in dreams?
That's an experience I've had several times. Also as a hypnopompic hallucination. However in those circumstances, I could still smell something for a few seconds after gaining complete consciousness again. A smell that I cannot physically account for in my immediate environment.

But was it a dream, or a "visitation" ?

I've experienced those dreams countless times, although not that often anymore. It was the worst when I was a teenager- probably my brain reorganizing itself :D

Maybe something really was ringing—a phone or an alarm clock or the doorbell or whatever. (I'd hate it if it were a smoke detector.) I often include external stimuli like an alarm clock, background music, or a barking dog in my dreams. I can sleep through anything that way.

So one time l woke up smelling smoke, when l lived in Hawaii. And my friend/co-worker just rang me on the phone. I told l was dreaming and l woke up smelling smoke. She told there had been a small fire in her house, and a lot of smoke in the kitchen. I woke up and thats when she called. Dreams, oh boy.
