A SEVERELY deaf and autistic teenager is en-route to Switzerland to tackle the Matterhorn.

Georgia Pilkington, 17, will be taking part in the Autism at Height project and will climb the Matterhorn mountain this month.

Georgia Pilkington, 17, will be taking part in the Autism at Height project and will climb the Matterhorn mountain this month.

The South Molton teenager has a passion for climbing and has been sponsored by Ellis Brigham as part of their young athletes team.

Georgia, who lives with her parents and younger brother, started climbing as a hobby when she was seven years old.

When she was 16 she competed in BMC Para Climbing Series for the hearing impaired category and won all three rounds.

Georgia went to Switzerland this week to tackle her latest challenge.

Mitch Pilkington, Georgia's mother, said she was "very proud" of her.

She said: "I respect her passion for climbing and her dedication to promoting deaf and autistic climbing. It makes me feel quite ill thinking of her climbing such a dangerous mountain but for her this is such an amazing opportunity. She is extremely fit and more than capable of climbing the Mattterhorn."

Mitch said Georgia is "determined" to prove she can tackle such an epic climb.

He said: "I see this challenge as a way to turn the many negatives in her life into a positive, both for herself and others."

Together with Autism At Height and Deaf Climbing UK, Georgia hopes to lobby the International Federation of Sports Climbing to include deaf and autistic categories in their international para climbing competitions.

Georgia is also due to compete on September 3 in Ratho, Edinburgh, in the first round of the BMC paraclimbing series 2016.

Last August Georgia was formally diagnosed at autistic. She is currently at Exeter College studying for her A Levels in geography, geology and law.
She is also part of the college's elite sports persons training programme.
