Friday the 13th certainly was lucky for disadvantaged youngsters in north Northumberland and the Scottish Borders .

Radio Borders’ Superhero Day raised thousands of pounds for Cash for Kids.

The event, sponsored by Go Outdoors in Scremerston, saw hundreds of people doing their bit to help raise awareness and funds for children on the autistic spectrum.

Just a handful of the fundraising events that took place include an abseil down the 175ft Haggerston Castle tower, a virtual cycle round the 156mile radio broadcast area and the Superhero Stomp for nursery schools across the region.

Foxtons in Berwick, Go Outdoors at Scremerston, Envy Hair in Hawick, the Jammy Coo in Liliesleaf and Boots the Chemist in Jedburgh were among many others who got involved to raise some much-needed cash for autistic children.

The money raised will go towards creating a lending library for games, toys and specialist equipment for the newly opened National Autistic Society support group here.

It will also pay for 50 children to go to the Calvert Trust in Kielder for a fun day of activities.

After hearing about the need of a bus to transport the children, Perryman’s buses came to the rescue and delivered a coach and driver, worth around £350.

Driver Josh Thompson certainly attracted more than a few glances in his Robin superheo outfit.

Candy Rafferty, Cash for Kids charity manager from Radio Borders, said: “Once again, the epic generosity of people and companies in our broadcast area has meant that we have achieved what we set out to do on Superhero Day.

“Words can’t express how grateful we are to our sponsors Go Outdoors, as well as everyone who donated.”

Radio Borders presenters were out and about in the community, broadcasting the most original fundraising ideas live on-air.
