Superhero bears made of cake are touring East Devon schools as part of an Exmouth mum’s drive to teach children with autism to aim high.

Victoria Vertigan, 32, who has three children with autism, said she made the bears to raise awareness of the condition.

Victoria won gold in Cake International’s Sculpted and Supported Novelty category last November at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.

She has set her sights on further success in 2016.

The Brixington mum said: “The bears have visited Brixington Primary Academy and Southbrook School in Exeter.

“I made the bears to raise the confidence and self-esteem of children with autism and to let them know that they can achieve anything.

“I was overwhelmed to win gold at Cake International; it was the icing on the cake for me last year. I didn’t go to the award ceremony expecting to win gold; just to have been placed would have been nice.

“In March and November of this year I plan to enter more Cake International competitions. I have several ideas planned, but I can’t give anything away.”

Victoria also spoke about her experience of raising children with autism.

The mum believes some members of the public are too quick to judge children with autism and their parents.

She has called on people to be more considerate to kids with the condition.

The 32-year-old continued: “I also made the bears to raise awareness about autism and to show that it’s not children being naughty or the parents’ fault.

“People tend to just stand, watch and make comments about something they don’t understand.

“One of my four children had a meltdown at a fair, because he doesn’t like crowds and he was screaming.

“I went down to his level gave him a cuddle and he calmed down afterwards, but we were getting funny looks and I felt people were judging me.”
