Synthesizer ....Anyone into that?

I have recently bought a Korg X50, I've always been into playing music, one way or the other....Would love to know if anyone else is into that as well.

Hah... I own an X50 myself :D (the limited edition camouflage one)

I quite enjoy synthesizers, though finances limit my choices a bit. I'd love to have a Doepffer modular system, but they're the price of a small car, lol.

My experience however is mostly samplers and grooveboxes in terms of hardware. I'm more of a soft-synth guy I guess, which do their job fine if you're working on music at home. Live on the other hand... I'd prefer hardware.

I am a rookie, I have been playing keyboad/piano for most of my life...but the technical stuff ie how to get started with the software, gaahhhh,...is doing my head in. I want to be able to record my music on my laptop, not sure which software to use.

Heh.. I'm way more into the technical stuff than I am into play I guess. But that probably comes with being more into audio production instead of performing.

As for recording; there are a lot of cheap (and probably even free) options available, but it does depend a lot on where you wanna go with it. If you just want to record your synthesizer even Audacity could work (provided you wire it correctly to your laptop). If you want to add more instruments, drum machines, vocals and whatever, you should probably look at a lite version of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), since they offer mulitrack recording and editing. Though depending on your system specs on your computer performance might be an issue; since the more tracks you add to your project, the heavier the load comes.

I've tried out the software that came with the X50 myself, though I wasn't that excited about it. Yes, it offers to change the preset banks in terms of sounddesign, but considering I never brought it along to a gig, I had little motivation to fiddle around with it. Most of the time I ended up using my X50 as a midicontroller rather than an actual instrument hooked up to speakers.

I have Audacity on my laptop, so I guess the correct wiring is the next step...Most greatful for help :)
