Talk Talk landline and Internet problems in the UK

Above,

I am fully aware of Google, the Talk Talk website and their forum.

The landline and Internet have both just been down for the last half hour, I managed to speak to my Dad who is also on Talk Talk phone and Internet at home, and he says his has also been down for the last 2 and half days.

Does anyone know of an outage in the North and Central Sheffield areas?

Just tried to call Talk Talk on my mobile, grr! I hate automated call centres, I wanna talk to a human being, preferably someone who understands my accent (NOT an Indian).

I can't imagine any communications systems that would employ a real person to field inquiries about outages given that they cannot adequately inform the public over in real time whatever their accents may be. If they don't know, handling upset customers is likely to just make matters worse.

In the event of an automated message saying the system is down and little else, at least you know that they know, and are likely doing something about it in real time. In other words, sit tight and wait. Not because you should, but rather because there's nothing else you can do other than make yourself miserable.

The system will be back up when it's back up and not a moment sooner. When you need patience far more than answers.

Not too long ago, in the 1960s and decades prior, phone lines would go down in storms, and everyone patiently waited. Service usually resumed in 3 to 5 hours. Unless a tornado had gone through, and then it was days.

Nowadays people freak out if they lose a few minutes of service!

Yeah 20 years ago I was on 56k dial up, and a Thunderstorm fried my Modem.

AOL wouldn't do anything because it was an "Act of God".

I am proud of living through times when phones were wired to a wall with 3 foot cord, and were considered a luxury. We had to ask permission to use the phone which was only in the kitchen and one had no privacy in talking. People had more patience then. They were more polite too.

Reminds me of when the Bay Area had an unusually bad electrical storm. Where the next day there was a line of people with their EMachines computers and fried 56kbps modems, looking to have Best Buy replace them.

Cheap components, the kiss of death. Also helps to use surge protectors. Better still, don't use a computer during a thunderstorm. I still shut mine down at the first crack of thunder even when on a broadband connection.

My Chromebook Desktop still causes power surges sometimes when I shut down at night or before I go out during the day.

It's annoying but the electrical company won't do anything about it.

A couple of years ago a storm blew a trampoline through our phone line, taking it down, and of course the internet too, in an area with no mobile phone coverage *gasp*. It took 3 months for them to fix it. To quote my then 70 year old dad, it was a Robinson Crusoe like existence. And extremely annoying for me when I was trying to do my MSc dissertation and had to keep driving into the nearest town with an open wifi. I ate way to much mcdonalds that summer...

Anyway, just sit tight and be patient, it will be back up when it's up.

Well, if the proximate cause remains the power supply or a component on your motherboard in your Chromebook, that's considered a products liability issue between you the consumer and the manufacturer of your Chromebook if still under warranty. Not the utilities company.

Another reason to run a desktop system. Easy and inexpensive to replace a power supply if and when necessary. It happens. One component in my experience that most definitely won't function indefinitely. o_O

Everyone had front porches, too. If you sat on one, people would stop a minute and chat. We also had a community convienence store with a bench and a few chairs. People would visit there and drink soda and eat candy or chips. We called it the community center.

Consider picking a different ISP? If you have the money, a ISP that's considered to have better customer vice is more worthwhile.

My Landline is with Talk Talk therefore I get Fibre for free.

If I move to another provider I have to pay for both the Landline and the Fibre, although I did consider moving to either Plusnet or Sky.

Up to nearly 5 years ago I was with Plusnet for ADSL Broadband, only reason I left was cos I wanted to upgrade to Fibre and they insisted I take THEIR phone line, plus I got banned on their forum, they didn't like that I was critical of the Daily Fail.

Yup, good old days. Now, if you live in certain areas of Chicago, and sit out in your porch, you run the risk of getting shot by stray “gangbanger” bullets. Kids do not play outside anymore either.

You need to get a good power surge protector for your computer(s), as Judge suggested. Don't get a cheap one - get a heavy duty protector that can handle large electrical loads. It will save you time, money and frustration in the long run.

A lot of it is changing your attitude. It stinks quite honestly.

My ISP I'm very happy with. It's fast. I pay for my own line and just have broadband. Unlimited fibre I have, with no traffic shaping. You can watch what you want online, or just get a TV card if you have Windows.

If you were giving a newspaper abuse on an ISP forum, I'm not surprised they may have something to say about that.

If you calm down a lot of your impotent rage, you'll find life a lot easier. No-one wants someone who consistently has an angry attitude to customers. They want polite, positive and helpful.
