This was an era where, if you saw your competition had overhead valves, you knew you were in trouble.
And a little historical note; most cars here in the UK didn't have four wheel brakes until the early to mid 20's. If you did have them you'd have a little warning triangle on the rear that said 'Four Wheel Brakes'. This gave warning that you could stop faster than the person behind!
