The shaving thread

Which type of razor do you use? Which types of razor blades do you use? Etc.

For the past few years I've been using a Gillette Fusion cartridge razor which does an alright job, but lately I've been looking into double-edge razors and blades in hopes that I can get a cleaner shave and save lots of money. For about $30 I could get a Merkur razor (which could easily last me forever) and for the same price I could buy 100 Feather razor blades which could last me 2+ years. This is peanuts considering that just 8 Gillette Fusion cartridges cost nearly the same price of both the Merkur razor and those blades combined.

I'm guessing that the blades would be more important than the razor used, but lots of people seem to love these Merkur razors, so I'll probably go through with getting one of them. Initially I was going to get a gold-plated "Futur" Merkur razor, but think I'll just go with the much cheaper "1904" for now. As for the brush, I'll probably start off with the cheapest badger-hair brush I can find (badger-hair brushes are supposedly more effective than other types of shaving brushes). One more thing I might have to look into are shaving creams; not sure if the type of shaving cream you use makes much of a difference or not. Does anyone know if the type of shaving cream you use matters much?

This is pretty much what I'll be getting (in fact it is what I'll be getting; the only thing different is the brush but my brush will also be a badger-hair brush like the one below):

Of course, I don't shave my face or head, but from my experience after years of shaving other areas, I will say that I do believe shaving cream matters a great deal. I used to think it was just marketing and soap worked fine, but I would end up with a lot of inconvenient problems. CCheap shaving cream or just soap often left me feeling kind of rough and dry at best, along with increasing the chances of razor burn and ingrown hairs. Of course I never used after shave, but a nice lotion afterwards can make the milder problems go away. It also depends on your skin type, though, I want to add, and different lotions/creams effected me differently- you just have to experiment a bit.

I use a Gillette Fusion razor. It works alright, but does not last long. I also use sensitive shaving cream. It prevents my skin from becoming irritated.

That razor looks pretty good, I should consider buying a nice quality one.. I am forced to shave everyday.

Also, I alternate between aftershave and post-shaving balm.

I'm actually thinking of getting a straight sometime in the future. Replaceable blades can be purchased much cheaper than I thought, so it would probably be reasonable to pay for blades rather than sharpen a blade all the time.

If I get a straight razor I'll likely get this one and use these blades.

Why that particular straight razor? Because it's the cheapest Feather razor on that site. Feather is a highly-esteemed Japanese razor company and I imagine the blades would work just as well in that razor as they would in any other Feather straight razor on that site. So I figure I might as well get the cheapest razor.

This wooden Feather razor would be nicer to own (mostly for being aesthetically pleasing), but it's more than twice as much as the other one:

I just use disposable razors. I don't shave every day, I don't mind a bit of stubble. Also sometimes I'm just too lazy, unless it looks terrible. The End.

I pretty much have to use electric razors because I never really learned how to use manual ones without slicing my face up, no matter how careful I am.

I've got pretty good at shaving without cutting myself, it takes practice and patience. I think the worst thing you can do is shave with a manual razor while in a rush or under pressure. I've cut myself a few times when I left shaving to the last minute.

I simply use disposable razors, sometimes i don't even use cream, just a bit of a warm water and soap will do. I don't grow beard-like gardens on my face, i grow whiskers it seems. though the more i shave the more stubble and eventually, if left, whiskers appear. the end.

I can't picture you with a beard.

How often do you let your facial hair grow out?

I usually just shave when needed. I only end up with a beard because I can't be bothered shaving or it's expensive (buying razorblades). I once decided that I would grow a proper beard just to see what it looked like but now I prefer to shave.

Disposables, 3 or 4 blade. I've been wanting to invest in a electric razor for quite some time to cut down on costs of blades, just haven't gotten around to it.

I'll probably get an electric razor for my next birthday. The cost of blades soon adds up.
