The sound of chewing

One thing I can't cope with is the NOISE people make when chewing, even with their motuhs closed. Sometimes even the sounds I make make me feel uncomfortable. Many times I have stood up and postponed my meal due to this problem. But it's not just that I don't like it, I really hate it and makes me feel so anxious.

Ew, this one is big for me. Biting the fork/spoon, chewing with the mouth open, or even loudly chewing with closed mouth, breathing loudly while chewing...

For that matter, I can't stand the way it feels when someone breathes on me, either. Part of why it takes me so long to get comfortable in bed at night is because I have to make sure my arms are positioned so I'm not breathing on myself! (along with all of the other factors that must be considered, lol)

Another thing that annoys me to no end...aluminum foil. Ugh! I can't stand to touch it or hear it. If I have to touch it, my teeth hurt. It's worse if I'm eating at the same time as touching it, or if it rubs against the rings on my fingers or touches my fingernails.

Along those lines, I have to keep my nails very short. If they're too long, it annoys me for them to click against the keys on the keyboard when I type (I'm on the computer a lot for work). I also can't stand for my toenails to get long, because one will start digging into the toe next it, and that just about gives me a panic attack, lol.

People eating chips does it for me. For some reason it actually angers me - maybe it's because it's so loud. My Mama does it when I'm talking to her on the phone. It drives me crazy! I think it's very rude.

Absolutely, I prefer eating alone. Only exception being in restaurants cause all the surrounding noise covers it.

:D me too!

Styrofoam, the feel, the sound. Just looking at it sends shivers down my spine.

One of my NT friends has this same problem, in fact. I could barely get her through the opening few minutes of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly as a result. Misophonia is not limited to AS.

Styrofoam annoys me, but not so much that I have to avoid it (I just don't like the sound of it rubbing against anything). My daughter, however, despises it!

I have a limited version of this - I can't stand the sound of someone chomping their teeth when eating soft food (it's a banana, how much chewing does it take??). Closely related is the sound of someone eating ice.

It's not so bad if I am eating at the same time, probably because the sound of my chewing muffles the other person's eating sounds. I realize that my eating sounds would be equally annoying and therefore I have no "right" to dislike it, but I do. I've learned to tolerate it but it still bugs me.

My NT sister has this problem, she cannot stand the sound of people eating at all. As a teenager she refused to eat at the same time as us. She now listens to music on earphones at dinner.

My father used to add food to his mouth along with food he was already chewing. When he opened his mouth while there was already food in it, it made a squishy sound that really annoyed me. Also I absolutely can not tolerate gum whackers.

A lot of this resonates with me..

I hate the sound of slurping. I used to HATE the way my Dad ate soup.

I hate aluminum foil and it also makes my mouth hurt/feel uncomfortable.

I also can't stand my nails being anything other than short. It drives me totally nuts.

I've been trying to let my nails grow to a size slightly longer than they have been, for social reasons. But my fingers feel so weird. I can feel the nail. Not to mention the feeling of the teeny tiny stuff that gets underneath there. Not to mention the annoyance of the fact that that part of the finger which is now covered by nail can no longer feel other objects directly. So recently, I just cut them back to close to their previous shortness.

The sound of someone else close to me chewing or drinking drives me up the wall. Most loud sounds cause me to have issues. I love going to Nascar and NHRA drag races. Obviously there is lots of noise there. The first few I attended I took no hearing protection and basicly went into shutdown as soon as I speed walked to the car. I learned to take my headset with me and listen to my police scanner, tuned to the radio traffic between the driver and his crew. However that set up would look odd at a dinner table! Mike

My NT sister has to have the TV on because she finds the sounds of people chewing "disgusting".

Ironically, my NT wife would support you on this. She feels the same way about chewing sounds. I am sensitive to many sounds, but not this particular one. Heck, when my dogs chew it sounds like someone let lumberjacks go to work inside, but for some reason at any volume this sound is fine. A child screaming, though? It's a wonder I like children.

People eating and chewing is ok, I’m usually too focused on my own meal or stuck in my own head to notice but my aunt does this thing when she eats, she put the fork in her mouth curls her lips up and close her teeth down on the fork then drags the fork from her mouth… my mom and I tend to flip out at her every time.

The one sound I can’t stand is the sound of dogs licking themselves, that wet, slurpy, slopp sound eeeewwww!

Yeah, I have the same problem of someone chewing and the noises they make :/ It drives me crazy and was the reason why I always took my tray outside or sat alone on the cafeteria bench. It's not so bad at home as long as the T.V. is going or have something to distract me from the noises their making ...

Chewing noises is a big one for me, also the screeching noise when you cut food hard with a knife on a plate. I'm getting shivers just thinking about it now.

oh yes, Styrofoam noises are terrible too.
