The Sports Talk Thread

Geordie

Geordie
In this thread, I plan to talk nothing except sports.

As you know, today it will be Germany vs Australia. I think the Germans will sure win --- most probably 1-0, because the Australian defence is notoriously solid BUT it is still ageing, as compared to the Germans' relative youth. And as my sister raised, 'Ballack raised his teams to get 2nd. Without Ballack, will they get 1st?'

I have been watching the World Cup on mute/closed captions because the underlying buzzing from those horns makes it extremely difficult to listen. I don't dislike noise - in American football there is lots of it, but it ebbs and flows with the game and has different timbres and rhythms. I guess it is the monotony that is so irritating to me.

That being said, I always look forward to the Cup. I remember watching Holland v. Germany in the 2000 cup. My son and I were sitting an a big plaza at the Worlds Fair in Hannover watching on this giant screen. I can't even remember who won but the energy in the crowd, both for Holland and for Germany, was really powerful.

Speaking about Arizona, I hope the 2 Arizona major college teams will never have 6 more new Big 12 current members as their conference mates. I think California or Washington are way better than the new non-coastal teams man (even considering Oklahoma and Texas)...

And for me, I am happy Germany won 4-0, while I am expecting Argentina to win it all!

The strangest thing to me about collegiate sports is how involved
people get in the rivalries. Some of my cousins are rabid fans
of Michigan State, but have never attended the school. One got
very cranky with me for mentioning my lack of understanding.
As if I were criticizing her for not going to college.

Other relatives support University of Michigan.
The pro-spartans and pro-wolverines both are against Ohio.
Of course.
