The X-Files

You already know there's a couple of us on here from your intro thread :D
Maybe not obsessed in my case... more of a "healthy interest" ;)

Watched it since 1993. Couldn’t bring myself to watch the new material because I’m just scared it’ll ruin the old stuff for me.

A lot of people in the fandom felt it was ruined, but for me, the ending was perfect, and rebooting it was totally worthwhile.

To my knowledge Fox is still "muldering" over whether or not to create a twelfth season which would most definitely not include Gillian Anderson.

I'm guessing there won't be another season. I don't see Fox- or Chris Carter treating this series like CBS, where they expect the audience to immediately support an entirely new cast based on the original series.

RIP agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

There isn't going to be another season without Gillian. They already tried to do the show without David back in the day, and it got cancelled/half ruined. The show is only good with Mulder and Scully together.

Replacing Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully would be like replacing Tom Selleck's Thomas Magnum. CBS was foolish enough to go there, but I suspect both Fox and creator Chris Carter know their core audience too well to make such a mistake.

I tried watching the latest incarnation of "Magnum P.I.". It last about ten minutes, then I just stopped watching. Not the same at all given that the original cast created IMO "larger than life" characters, much like actors Dana Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Agreed- replacements didn't work in the past and won't work in the future for "The X-Files".

I didn't mind the reboot myself. It wasn't very consistent but there were a few decent episodes, and a couple of real stinkers too. I was great to see them back together. Much as I like Robert Patrick as an actor, Doggett was no match for Mulder and the show lost it's appeal. Bringing back Duchovny, Anderson and Mitch Pileggi made the reboot feel far more like the glory days than the last couple of seasons of the original run.

Yeah, it didn't work in 2002 when they brought in Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish. They are both great actors, but they aren't David and Gillian, and The X-Files could never be their show.

Yeah, I liked the reboot, even if they made Scully pregnant again at 54. Haha.

That's why I agreed with your original post. While they are both competent actors, there's no way they could recreate the peculiar chemistry of Mulder and Scully. Duchovny and Anderson had a monopoly on those roles. It happens...

Then again there are other examples with very different dynamics where newfound success wasn't so difficult. CBS' original series "Hawaii Five-O" had some good stories, but most of the cast weren't particularly memorable compared to the wildly popular remake where all the cast seemed to have created those "larger-than-life" characters.

Apart from Gillian Anderson having no interest in future episodes, I'm afraid we the core audience of X-Files fans probably don't make up a demographic worth the risk of another remake compared to other fan bases and remakes.

I think I'm one of the few people that really likes Doggett. Mulder is definitely my favorite, but Doggett always seemed like a solid partner for Dana, and he always cared.

The seasons with Doggett are still pretty solid for me, especially since they were still working Mulder's story even when he wasn't there.

Well, David and Gillian very notoriously have solid chemistry even off screen. So much that the tabloid rumors have been at it for decades.

I remember looking forward to Sunday evening in the 1990's, hanging out a friend's house to watch the latest X-Files episode, plus Simpson's as well... It was a regular "thing", good memories...

I have the cable channels I can watch the show on, but have really lost that interest...

Gillian Anderson's decision to call it quits doesn't really surprise me. I mean, I've seen her in a wide variety of roles since the series ended several years ago. Plus dodging being typecast in Hollywood isn't an easy feat. A must for any actor seeking to break out of any one genre.

I love science fiction, but at times I do feel badly for those actors who seem to be perpetually stuck in the same genre. Still, I suppose it's a living for those who never really achieve serious notoriety.

I remember her in "The Last King of Scotland". Hardly recognized her at the time.

Saw her again in a bit part in the television mini series "War and Peace".
