I wrote a paper few year back for parents, struggling with Autistic children. Its a long paper, I am only posting the conclusion:
Autistic mind is alien to us as they are in minority. We study them with the intent to modify their behavior to suit our world and that we can relate to them. They listen to us and adapt to our way of life, as they believe it’s not their world. Some of them manage to adapt to our world but the rest of them struggle through out their lives to meet our expectations.
I have written this paper not with the intent to highlight their weakness or impairments. I have only highlighted core challenges they face, rest is a subset of these four challenges; Theory of mind, tunnel vision, sensory issues and language. The terminology used by me is from our world’s perspective, so that the parents and teachers can better understand them.
I believe, that they can live in this world happily and contribute to the well being of this world by their sheer genius as they have done in the past. I believe, that the problem is with us that we fail to understand them. Instead, our endeavor is to make them like us. They are not broken and we don’t have to mend them. We have to understand them and their beautiful world, which so far we have only managed to destroy by not trying to understand them and providing support, which is infective and at best can make them functional from our perspective.
