All brands are functionally identical except for the use of fluorescent chemicals for the whiter-then-white effect.

Apart from that buy based on taste.

I like this kind as it doesn't have such an overwhelmingly strong flavor and smell:

I just buy whichever is on offer in the supermarket at the time. But I don't always like the really strong toothpastes because occasionally I have burnt my throat with it which literally gave me a dry, sore, swollen throat for a few days.

Not true. Sensodyne is very good at calming down sensitive teeth. It contains potassium nitrate which calms the tooth nerve. That's why the dentists I've gone to recommend it for sensitive teeth. Experience tells me it works. Most but not all US toothpaste has stannous fluoride. The fluoride combines with exposed dentin to make it stronger. Some toothpaste is designed to whiten by including abrasives or a bleaching agent. Some include baking soda. All kinds of toothpaste include some kind of cleaning agent, usually a nontoxic detergent.

Probably as important as the tooth paste is the brush. I switched to an ultrasonic brush from an "Oral B," and it made a noticeable difference. I haven't yet switched from floss to a Water Pic for between the teeth, but my wife says I should.

I like Dabur RED, ayurvedic toothpaste from India. Peppermint, clove, ginger, black pepper, long pepper, calcium carbonate-based.

I use a gel prescription tooth paste with a billion percent of fluoride because my teeth are falling apart.

I like the taste and feel of Colgate.
I never really liked the feel of any toothpaste and used pure baking soda until I was twenty.
That pasty, foamy feel is one of my sensory dislikes.
Colgate seems less pasty.
I also like the Ultra-sonic brush by Oral-B.

I use Crest regular paste. I prefer the flavor to other kinds. I can and will use others when needed, but it's what I buy if I can.
