Antonia Standen, Lizzie Hurford, Amara Baxter, Louie Standen (being held), Violet Mcardle and Luca Standen (standing at the front)
INSPIRED by her twin brothers, a pupil from St Marychurch C of E Primary School recently organised a 5K run and raised over £400 for the charity, National Autistic Society (NAS).
Antonia Standen and Violet Mcardle, Year 6 pupils at St Marychurch C of E Primary School, are both working towards achieving their Civic Award, and as part of the award they decided to raise funds for a charity close to their hearts.
The girls chose to raise funds for NAS, inspired by Antonia's twin brothers Luca and Louie, who were both diagnosed with Autism last year.
Antonia's mum and dad recently attended the NAS EarlyBird course along with Luca and Louie's one to one helpers, to learn strategies for helping Luca and Louie to increase their communication skills, vocabulary and day to day interaction.
After hearing of their work, the girls decided to raise funds to help the charity to continue to provide information, support and services to people with autism and their families across the UK.
The girls were accompanied on the run by Antonia's cousin Amara Baxter, and St Marychurch C of E school teacher and one of the Autism Champions for Torbay schools, Lizzie Hurford.
Antonia's brothers also joined the girls for the last leg of the run, from Torquay Harbour to Paignton Geopark.
Antonia said: "Before I started the run I was a little nervous but at the end I felt really happy that I had completed the run and raised so much money for the National Autistic Society."
The girls are still counting their sponsorship money, but have so far raised over £400 for NAS.
The run was such a success that they have now decided to make it an annual event, and are already busy recruiting more runners for next year, with nine people already signed up for the charity run.
Antonia's parents Paula and Kevin Standen said: "We are very proud that the girls decided to organise the run to raise money for such a worthwhile cause and that they have decided to make this an annual event."
