A singing group for adults with autism wants to get on the local map and start doing more gigs.
The Singing Spectrum is the only one of its kind in Hampshire that caters specifically for adults on the autism spectrum.
The group members, who are mainly from Gosport, rehearse at Tesco in Fareham’s community room, which is free to use and use sound equipment on loan from Autism Hampshire when they go and sing at other venues.
They have sung at lunch groups and can change their music according to the audience.
Su Seymour is a volunteer for Autism Hampshire and founder of the group.
She is now looking to raise awareness of the Singing Spectrum so they can do more performances at fetes, schools and other events.
She said: ‘The best thing about this group is that we’re raising awareness of autism.
‘It shows the positive sides of autism. Some people think we’re limited and that we can’t do anything.
‘We could never sing in front of people before but now we’re even doing solos, which is helping our confidence.
‘We love singing. When we’re singing, there’s no stress at all.
‘If I go and sing for a couple of hours, it’s like a release for me.
‘It’s a real enjoyment for people on the spectrum and it helps them help others.’
There are only a handful of people in the group at the moment but Su is keen to expand it a little further.
The group perform for a donation, which go towards the group’s expenses and local autism causes.
Last month, the group raised £115 from singing in Fareham’s Tesco.
Anyone over the age of 18 who has been diagnosed on the autism spectrum is welcome to join the group.
People who can play instruments are also welcome.
The group rehearses every Monday at Fareham Tesco from 12.30pm-3.30pm.
Su also has plans to set up an adult autism social group in the Discovery Centre in Gosport.
