Warhammer 40,000 (And general model painting)

I have semi-recently (within the last two years) developed a love of model painting, especially for the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000. I was wondering if anyone shared this interest? Here are some of my works:

I've got plenty more if anyone's interested in seeing.

Heh... I'm into 40k since about 9 years now. I was on a break a few years ago but got back into it about 2 years ago.

I liked painting the models more than gaming, though I get in a game every once in a while. But I've taken a liking to a few other wargames over 40k (though I still like 40k). Warhammer in general tends to be a costly hobby and some alternatives tend to be a bit easier on the wallet in general.

I've had a lot of different factions in those years I was into 40k (and even had a brief stint with Warhammer Fantasy).

Like many I started out with Space marines (started with Ultramarines, up to Dark angels and settled with Imperial fists eventually), then I expanded into Chaos Space Marines, and got more involved with converting and ended up doing a Traitor (imperial) guard army of sorts. I eventually got a small group of Imperial guard (those Vostroyan Firstborn models still look great; but way too expensive to start as an army). I somewhat lost interest and sold everything. I was short on money (unemployment and such).

So 2 years back, I had some money to spend on hobbies and got back into it by collecting a Grey knights force (since that's probably the cheapest (or at least one of the cheapest) way to get back into 40k. I ended up doing another Dark angels army as well. And I was in about... 6 months of the hobby, having 2 fully playable armies again. Then, I acquired some Orks through a friend of mine and so I ended up with an Ork army. Last year I got a good deal on pretty much an entire, new in box, Tau army, so I got into Tau. And not long after that I got into Chaos daemons.

Eventually I sold off most of my stuff and I just have Orks and Chaos forces (daemons and marines) both over 3000 points in total points value.

Sometimes it just itches me to start a new army, but with the small amount of time I spend on gaming, it just ends up collecting and painting a lot and eventually selling it again. Which in general doesn't make you any profit. And I can't really justify selling figures at a loss anymore.

As for those other games I got miniatures for; Warmachine (which aesthetically should satisfy anyone into steampunk-type mecha combat and such) and I have a small Dystopian wars fleet which is alternate universe steampunk type naval warfare.

Are they metal or some sort of plastic or composite?

They used to be pewter for years. At least, single infantry models. Vehicles are usually plastic kits. Though recently they started getting away from pewter and did resin. But because of the issues it has (airbubbles and such) they (Games workshop; the brand that sells Warhammer 40.000 figures and rulebooks) are moving to all plastics now.

Pewter figures are still a big thing with wargaming miniatures but slowly you're seeing more and more companies moving to plastics. Though not all are the same kind of plastic you're used from say... Revell modelling kits. Privateer press, another one of those companies for similar miniatures, tends to put out a plastic that will not fuse together with plastic glue like regular plastic kits and some kind of super glue is still required for those.

King: If you've got any Dark Angels (my army) left, I'll buy them for a reasonable price. I love painting and collecting, since I suck at gaming hahaha.

Sportster: Most models are plastic, with special ones being metal or a more fragile higher detail material.

I built a lot of car, truck, and motorcycle models over the years, so I know the type of plastic in Revell models. My buddy uses some sort of glue called "Jet" that he mixes with baking soda. That stuff sets up like iron and works well on plastics. Have you ever heard of it?

One of the students at the university I work builds models similar to yours and Andrew's. He mentioned something about armies, etc., so it makes me wonder if he was into Warhammer 40,000. He was really into it, as his entire dorm room was covered in the figures, vehicles, and I think there were even some dragons.

Never heard of jet, but I should look into that. Though it sounds more like some kind of industrial glue, heh.

Chances are that student collected Warhammer. It still is the biggest of all the tabletop wargames. Though with the dragons it might've been Warhammer fantasy, which is like the same already says; in a fantasy setting. Knights, dragons, elves, trebuchets, wizards and more of that go there.

However, he might have been one of many wargamers who have multiple armies for multiple gaming systems. I'm guilty of this as well, hehe.

Sorry, but I don't own any Dark Angels anymore. The last Dark angels incarnation I did was a successor chapter and not regular Dark angels called Angels of redemption with a split green/white color scheme rather than the dark green they usually come equipped with.

Though considering; Dark Angels are cheap to acquire on ebay and such right now, given that they are one half of the Dark vengeance starterbox. Granted, from a modeling perspective they're a bit stale, since they're single pose figures, rather than the multipose you'd get with a regular box of marines and such.

I use to play with my friend. I would't have the patience to paint the figures though. Anyhow, those who shared their figures great work :)
