Dear Families, Caregivers, and Professionals,

I am a graduate student at Washington State University in the psychology department. For my PhD program, I am a conducting a study investigating the perceptions of emotional functioning of children with ASD and factors that may influence those perceptions. This research has been approved by the Washington State University Institutional Review Board. I am inviting caregivers and their children to participate.

You and your child may participate in the study if your child is between the ages of 10 and 17, has a formal diagnosis of autism, you are both fluent in English, and if you are the legal guardian of your child. Before participating in the study, you will need to fill out a consent form online and your child will need to complete an assent form online.

Participation in this research includes completing an online survey that will take about one hour to one and a half hours to complete. Your child will be asked to complete a Zoom-based assessment with the researcher using a standardized brief measurement of intelligence. You and your child will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires assessing internalizing symptoms (e.g., depressive symptoms, anxiety) and other behavioral difficulties.

You and your child may be asked to partake in two Zoom-based joint psychoeducational sessions facilitated by a trained clinician. Three to four weeks later, you and your child will complete the questionnaires again. The study should take about 2-4 hours to complete, across 2-4 zoom sessions (depending on the results of your initial study visit and randomly assigned condition). After study completion, your family will be compensated with a $50 Amazon gift card. Gift cards will be delivered either electronically via your email or physically mailed to your home, depending on your preference.

If you have any questions or would like to participate in the research, I can be reached at [email protected].

Feel free to also check out the study flyer here

Sincerely,
Sarah Boland, M.S.
