Weird Thing About Names

Riley

Well-Known Member
When I do things in my head (Imagine stories), I sometimes worry about how my characters are named. Mainly: That their names shouldn't have anything similiar (Spelling and/or sound) to others' names and if other characters have a similar name. Anyone else have a similar hang up? Is having characters with similar names okay?

I'd rather characters had names that were distinct from each other.

People in real life sometimes give their children names which are similar.
Siblings, including twins, I have known, for instance.

Carl & Carol, Lucinda & Lucille, Ricky & Dicky, Suzette & Suzanne, Tom & Tim.

Or families in which every child's name must begin with the same letter:
Brad, Brenda, & Brian
Cate, Charlie, & Claire
Tammie, Tina, Tony & Trisha

In fiction, characters are easier to distinguish if their names start with different letters of
the alphabet and don't have too many of the same letter pairings.

Writing classes teach to opt for names that do not start with the same letter, rhyme, sound similar, etc.

If nobody else knows the name, if the name is known only to you,
how could it possibly matter what you privately/secretly call your
characters?

@sidd851 No. What I mean is:

  • When I'm doing a story in my head for something like Devilman, I want to sorta transplant a character from another, similar story into that world: A girl named Akemi. My problem is that the male lead is a boy named Akira.
  • I adappt a vesion of Flamebird (A comics character) known as Sandy; Loosely based off Evelyn Evelyn's song. But I worry her hair and the first letter of her name make her too similar to Spoiler.

I'm sorry.
I knew what you meant.
I was only having a little fun.
(I use the names " @tree " and " @Fino " for all the characters that I make up in my head.;))
