Well, here's OliveOilMom

OliveOilMom

I have some missing posts.
Hey ya'll! It's OliveOilMom. From what I understand some of you know me from WP. I thought I'd come over here and give this place a try.

For those who don't know me I'm 50 years old, live in rural Alabama right smack dab in the middle of nowhere, am married for 29 years to an NT and have 4 grown kids who are NT (except for my youngest son who I think has a little AS like me but he's not that interested in finding out), 2 high content wolf-husky hybrids and a purebred husky, 2 cats and as of last night 4 gerbils. I was dx'd with AS by a professional in my 40's and by then I had pretty much adjusted to the world and just thought I was a bit off. It really didn't make much difference to me either way at that point but explained a lot of things about myself to me and let me figure out different ways of dealing with things.

I'm a housewife and have been one for the most part of my married life although I've done quite a few jobs here and there just for fun at times and at times to make ends meet. I've been to college twice for two different majors but quit before graduation both times. I like retro and vintage clothing and lifestyles, I love to crochet and do needlecrafts, I sometimes watch tv but it's only Netflix now because we don't have cable but tv isn't a huge deal to me, and I like the middle ages, religions, and cultures.

I guess thats pretty much it, and if you want to know anything just ask cause I'm certainly not shy.

I look forward to posting with ya'll and getting to know everybody.

Later taters,
OOM

Welcome OOM,

I'm an ex-pat from WP, originally came to visit and decided to move in and call the place home.

Enjoy your stay, lots of great folk here.

Well hey there! Was that your username at WP? I think I remember you if it was. Or at least I remember seeing that username, the menopause is really playing havoc with my memory right now.
The exact same name I used here. Still occasionally lurk over there once and a while but don't post as much as I used to.

Superboyian, what is your avatar there? Your name isn't familiar but your avatar may be. Unless I've posted with someone in a thread a few times or had a particularly interesting debate with them, I may not remember a username of someone who wasn't a frequent or long time poster.

I left there BTW. Not going into it here, just didn't like the feel of it anymore.

Hi,
I've heard that wolf-hybrids are extremely challenging. Has that been your experience?

I also like the Middle Ages, religion (at least my own Catholic religion) and cultures.

They can be challenging. We have always had them in pairs, you can't have just one because of their pack drive. They will tear your house up if you do. The female got ran over and a few months later we got another male puppy. We got a purebred husky around Christmas, he was a stray. That's him in the pic. We know he is purebred because he had a chip and we called the owners who had given him away and he was given away after that, etc. They had been training him for shows and had put him in one, but he didn't win anything.

As for the hybrids, I'd say the best thing to do is get the male fixed right away. It cuts down on the aggressive behavior. We don't see much of it with ours but during a couple of winters they they turned into straight up a**holes. They would fight and go at each other constantly. Thats the only time I've ever been bit, when I was trying to seperate them when they got into it in the den. They didn't mean it and it wasn't that bad, but that was the last straw and they got fixed shortly after that. They are very territorial as well, but they aren't aggressive towards people usually, mainly other animals. I know they will kill other dogs and cats if they get out front so I try to keep them from getting out. We have a well fenced big back yard so they are fine going out there. They are house dogs though.

The main thing you have to remember is you and everybody else in the family has to outrank them in their minds. Always. You are the alpha and you never let the dog forget it. You aren't mean to them or anything, you just do it in certain ways. Never ever feed them first. You eat first, then feed them. If they eat their meal before the time you are planning to eat, go ahead and feed them but wait an hour or two before you eat so the order of eating isn't connected in their mind. Find the alpha of the dogs and give him his bowl first, every time then give the other dog his. Feed them in heirarchy always. We pour all the food at once but put down the older dogs bowl first, then the younger one, then the new husky's. He took his place as last in line with them fairly well but there were of course some dominance fights between them at first.

They do fine with our other animals. If we bring a new animal into the house we make sure we present it to them as ours. That means hands and teeth off! We keep them apart and watch them carefully at first and only leave them alone together when we are sure it's ok. Some hybrids are never ok around other animals but these were raised around them. My younger daughter loves cats and there were cats here when they came here so they are used to them. We have two cats now, one indoor one we inherited from my mother who has no claws at all and one fully armed indoor/outdoor one. We used to have a Giant Flemish Rabbit that we let hop freely around the house. It was bigger than some small dogs. The dogs left it alone and the older one seemed a little unnerved by it. I think he had the same reaction you or I would have if we had to live with a hamburger walking around the house.

They aren't protective like other big dogs either. They look very intimidating so that's a plus to would be burglers but when it comes down to it they get away from conflict. They would probably attack someone if they were attacking one of us, but they don't try and get inbetween us and someone they don't know or trust like other big dogs have done. Also, because the highest spot belongs to the alpha, never let them on the furniture until you say they can get up there. Even if you don't mind them being everywhere, find at least one piece of furniture that is off limits to them. Never let them have full run of all the furniture. Also, never let them on your bed unless you invite them. Not even during a thunderstorm. Make them get down if they jump up uninvited.

As for religion, I have always been Catholic but didn't practice during my childhood because I went to a private Baptist school (my grandfathers idea and tuition money), was devoutly Catholic for a few years in my 20's and 30's, and later got into Paganism, Druidry especially. I'm interested in learning about Judaism especially Orthodox, LDS and FLDS, the Quiverfull and Christian Patriarchy Protestant sects, the AME Church, and Islam as well as Nation of Islam. I'm not interested in converting to any of them, just learning all about them. I've learned about quite a few others and am bored with them ;-)

Are you in the SEC or do you want to be? What middle ages sites do you like and do you have any suggestions for me? Are there good books or documentaries you could suggest? Did you see the Tudors on HBO? Although it was historically inaccurate it was a good show and I liked the "feel" and "look" of it, ya know what I mean?

What cultures are you interested in? I'm interested in foreign cultures in the US such as Italian (I'm half!), Cherokee, Romany Gypsy, etc. Not so much the cultures of other countries but the culture that people have brought here and continued and changed. (Yes I'm aware that Romany Gypsies aren't from a particular country ;-) ) I'm also interested in traditional Celtic culture of Ireland and Scotland. How do you go about researching cultures and do you have any site suggestions for me?

We should start a thread in the special interests section for this! :-)

You probably would remember an avatar of a painting that has a lady reaching out but was recently changed to a lion.

Hello and welcome. I have never been to "WP" but from things that I have heard, don't think I want to. Plus I am most comfortable here and see no reason to look elsewhere. Besides, I am a loyal type and like things simple. Hope you enjoy it here and look forward to future conversations.
PS. We are the same age, I am not shy either, and I also live in the middle of nowhere.

Good to see other folks who are older. I'm 52 & live in the city. I'm a serious boater, too. No kids but always have a dog best friend. That's just how I roll. LOL

What's the WP? Curious...
