What are you nerdy / geeky for?

As it says on the tin!

Personally, I have an almost revolving door on certain things. I go throuhg fazes of wanting to do things and then not do it for ages but come back to it all the time.

Photography : I go in and out of loving and wanting to do stuff.

Comics : I keep dipping in and out of reading comics. I used to read 90% of the X-titles (X-Men, X-Force, Uncanny X-Men etc) and other Marvel titles, then moved on to Image titles. Now I tend to read more Indie stuff but have started reading Injustice - Gods Among Us (DC), Elephantmen, Chew, SAGA and a few more.

Technology : I love getting and setting up new techonology. When people get new things like laptops, mobile phones etc, I always beg them to let me set it up because it just excites me and I REALLY enjoy it. So much so,that when I am in an office based job and computers need to be moved, replacing keyboards etc, I always do it myself and always want to to it for IT because I can do it and it's a fecking waste of time for someone who can code and work on extremely complecated technology problems to be chaning frigging wires and moving a PC tower from one desk to another.

Collecting everything an artist / band / every episode - film in a series : Once I get into something, I need to have ALL of it. 99% of the bands and artists I listen to, I own every album and EP they have released. Yes, my collection is silly big. I must say that collecting dvds / blu rays of TV shows and films that are ongoing is a ****ing pain because most of the time I want them all together but don't want to wait till the have all come out to own them! ARGH! CONFLICTS!! haha

Anyone else out there like this?

The big ones for me, in no particular order:

Literature, classic or otherwise; comics, animation, assorted good television shows that aren't animated, video games, horsemanship, and world mythology and folklore. I've probably left a few out, but it's early and my brain still wants to sleep. Anyone who wants details about my list may ask. I don't want to choke the thread with my endless list of obsessions. :P

I love facts! I am interested in just about any topic, and will get stuck on something that interests me to the exclusion of everything else. I don't go anywhere without a book and often have two or three on the go at the same time. I love my computers and researching via the internet. Yes, I am a total geek, I've just learned to hide it (sort of).

:geek:

I'm not sure if there's anything I'm really nerdy/geeky with. I mean, there's obviously some stuff I like and spend some time on, but seeing how some people define themselves as "geeks" I'm nowhere that level over the fact that things bore me way to fast. It's probably why I can't get obsessed over anything either.

On the other hand; when talking about geeks and geeky things... there's always a bigger fish.

All that said; people have commented how I know way more about certain things that is considered "normal" or "healthy" and I'm quite often the go to guy for a few things. Maybe it's knowledge, maybe it's just because I have a different perspective to it.

The easiest things to claim nerdiness for are particular television shows and cartoons.

Books - both reading and collecting. If I find an author I enjoy I try to find every other thing they've written. Having my bookcases full gives me great satisfaction.

Most fields of psychology and anthropology.

The horror genre in general - I love horror films and games.

Like most people who have already posted, I tend to go through phases where a new interest consumes a vast amount of my time, until the next shiny thing catches my attention. :giggle2:

Whomever my current favorite author is. Past interests have included: Tolkein, Stephenson, William Gibson, Neal Gaiman, etc. I'm also pretty good at analyzing buoy data and wind station readings to find the best waves on a given day. I get a little ridiculous with all the swell height/period/direction stuff and how it affects each area.

Mickey Mouse and friends. I've been obsessed with that gang for six years and still going strong. I know a lot more about them than most people do, through not only their cartoons but also their comics. I've even screencapped the houses and other environments they live in, just to have a rough map of their worlds.
Right now I'm addicted to DuckTales Remastered, although since I've noticed it makes my computer heat up to around 90c I'm going to stop playing it every day and only play it whenever I really want to, and watch gameplays on YouTube otherwise. (I'm especially looking for one in which Scrooge says this thing that I can't understand and think is French. He only says it in dark places like Transylvania, the moon and Mount Vesuvius so I've been combing through those gameplays looking for a recording of that.)

Once I get into something, I try to obsessively collect everything about it, without getting to the point of not being able to eat like some people haha

Anyone who wants details about my list may ask. I don't want to choke the thread with my endless list of obsessions. :p

I wouldn't mind details, actually.

I am not sure if this original question is limited to examples of media and existing intellectual properties, or if it is meant to be some broader interests, but here are a few of mine—some of which come and go, and some of which are constant:

World-building, all the time. Spacecraft design for my own fiction. Currently (2013-) collecting and learning how to mod and custom-paint X-Wing Miniatures. Some of my early attempts here. I play the game alone, playing both sides and collect far more pieces than is necessary even reasonable. I geek-out collecting and accumulating things that capture my interest. Star Wars in general. Star Trek, too, while we're at it. Classic speculative fiction of the pre-1960's variety: Tolkien, Lovecraft, Lewis, Eddison. Esoteric ancient texts like The Book of Enoch. Human spaceflight, exoplanets, astronomy, NASA programs. Theology. Norse mythology (the world tree, especially), Mesopotamian mythology (the Shepherd of Anu), Finnish folklore and Grigori Rasputin. Technology in general, especially artificial intelligence, programming, gadgets. Nature, outdoors and survivalism, animal life. Fantasy artwork of the Wayne Barlowe and Zdislaw Beksinski variety. Making my own artwork. Photography too, while we're at it. Kindness and compassion. Post-rock and post-metal, especially bands that hate having that term applied to them. Writing lists of things I am interested in.

I am half-sorry for the info dump, but I get absolutely carried away with the above, and about eight hundred other specific things. Just blissed-out and dead to the world, and I love every second. That otherworldly sensation while zoomed into a detailed miniature and applying paint, or awash in a tidal wave of sonic annihilation, or the little zen moment before clicking the shutter button on a camera.

I would also certainly provide a detailed list upon request, in case anyone is interested in testing the limits of their bandwidth.

I go in to phases too, and focus my interests in to one or two things at a time, then switch back and forth between every few months/ years, depending how focused I am on an idea.

I do enjoy random facts though, and can have interesting conversations with many different people, and even if I have absolutely no interest in their topic, I still manage to learn all the facts I can about them, simply because I appreciate knowing things.

I used to be obsessed with drawing. I still draw, but am not so preoccupied with it anymore. Now I'm fascinated with psychology, and the human condition. Sometimes I'll research in to understanding the people around me; friends, family, even myself. The reason for this, is I love improving myself, and get a kick out of pulling off my little social experiments; which are mostly related to adjusting to life in general. This does mean that I can be a little self interested, and am guilty of talking about myself a lot, haha.

I love trying to understand how different people think; sometimes I'll even go in cognito, and read forums where men talk about how they feel about relationships, and women; in order to truly grasp what it's like for the other gender. It's truly amazing how much harder dating seems for men, now that I've educated myself. It actually feels a lot more like job hunting, more than dating. There's also the mixed feelings about whether woman should initiate things, or whether only a man should. I'm always curious to learn how men feel about this, and find most of the time young guys are glad if a woman approaches them, but the more mature men have admitted that they usually prefer to be in charge.

I also get obsessed with movies, home cooking, different facets of art (including photography), games (currently obsessed with the Simpsons game, 'Tapped Out'), this website (lol), as well as organising and categorising.

A brief shortlist of the things I'm probably the most geeky/nerdy about: Electric guitars, electric guitar pickups, FX pedals, Amplifiers, Strings etc (Basically anything relating to electric guitars) Video games, consoles and controllers, and lots of bands like the Beatles, Eagles, XTC, Bill Nelson/Be Bop Deluxe, the Beach Boys, Nirvana, Joy Division etc etc etc.

My friend's sister is like me and she sends me random facts and I love it hahaha.

For instance

"Yawning is the best way to get oxogen into your body is to drink water as that crates oxogen to your blood and woman have sharper taste buds than men and woman blink more than men"

hehe

As some of you might already know, I collect rubber ducks and love how each one is different and looks like they have their own personalities.
I'm also very interested in the origins of certain words or idiomatic expressions; it's fascinating to learn how they entered mainstream dialogue.
I'm also quite geeky when it comes to human biology and psychology. I actually got laughed at in school, because I said I liked science.

I've been meaning to get back to this thread, but I kept forgetting.

Anyway, since XAND wanted to learn more about my interests, here are some details:

Literature: I read everything. But particular favorite authors include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (I've only read one of her novels so far, but it was fantastic, and I have to read more of her.), Haruki Murakami (again, I've only managed to read one of his books so far after hearing great things about him for years), J.R.R. Tolkien, Pablo Neruda, Sylvia Plath, and Julie Otsuka.

Comics: anything and everything, but special favorites include Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (I really need to pick up the rest of the series . . . ), Batman, Spider-Man, and X-Men. I need to start reading The Walking Dead, too.

Animation: assorted anime with which I won't clog this thread, Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Thunder-Cats (both the classic and the new), Pinky and the Brain, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, and Gargoyles.

Other TV: NCIS, Law & Order: SVU, Monk, Psych, Sleepy Hollow, Almost Human, The Walking Dead, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Cape, Sherlock, and Elementary.

I think that's enough for now. :D

I have a great many interests, and because I can not engage all of them
at the same time, they seem to rotate through my attention span with
each lasting varying periods, but recurring always.
I love to study various species of ants, and very much enjoy viewing
various images of these different species.
I love to learn about art history, and in particular painting from 18th
and 19th centuries in landscapes.
I very much enjoy reading Scientific Daily and learning about new
particles, and how that might offer a new physics, new roads to follow
conceptually.

Cooking - don't talk to me about that unless you want what probably amounts to a year's worth of cooking lessons in one conversation.

Music but, I've learned to curtail my geeking out on people over that. Most just want the music, not the technical details of how it's made and what makes it great or, how I write, what I do to prepare for a concert, how security works, why autotune is the best and worst thing that ever happened to music.... Okay enough of that brain. :)

Computer specification in relation to gaming - I'll ream you a new one for trying to run a game on an under speced computer if I forget my manners.

I've got other interests which I will expound on if they come up and, I think you need the information I have but, I don't try to steer conversations to those like I do with music and cooking.

Machines! Big, complex machines. Now all I need is someone to listen to me explain how it works. My kids all have stories about how they had to listen to some boring explanation when they were trapped and could not get away. My wife knows things about subjects that she never, ever wanted to know about. I believe this is a trait of most geeks/nerds.

My latest project in plastic. A NeubauFahrzeug Nr.3-5 in 1/35 scale.

One of the strangest AFVs I've ever seen.

clg114 maybe you can explain an easier way to build a Whiz Bang Chicken Plucker. my ex tried and failed at that one. LOL

Not that I need the plucker now but, just the idea that I might make it work when he failed is appealing.
