What Do You Like To Eat?

I'm NT, love to cook, and often make food for my autistic GED students. I'm going to talk to them this week about their preferences and dislikes but would love to hear from the greater audience on this website about any particular foods you love or hate. I have to transport whatever I cook to the local college where I teach so the food needs to be easily packaged and served, and I have no means to warm up anything there. I am tutoring 3 students this semester so we're a small group.

In years past, I have brought all kinds of tacos (beef, pork, chicken and fish), fruit and green salads, deviled eggs, hearty whole grain muffins, and various sandwiches like ham and cheese, tuna fish, roast beef, and pulled barbeque pork. Everyone loves ranch dressing and dill pickles, most like a little hot sauce on tacos, some do not like fish, no one likes whole beans or refried beans, but everyone likes sweets which I don't like to cook or serve because sugar is devoid of nutrition and promotes obesity and sugar highs.

I'd love to hear your suggestions of what to serve and what to avoid. Thanks!

Speaking for myself here, I avoid anything with vinegar in it like the plague. Meat, vegetables, cheese...those on the other hand tend to disappear quickly in my presence. Certain textures do trigger my taste buds and cause me to gag, but if it's good enough I can usually resist the temptation to spit it out.

It varies wildly from person to person, so obviously I can't speak for your students or anyone else, but there you go.

That is really what I'm interested in knowing. Perhaps it has nothing to do with autism but I'd be interested to know if there are common food likes and dislikes among autistics.

Personally, there's certain textures of food I don't like. I won't eat yoghurt that has pieces of fruit in because it just feels so horrible. It's yoghurt with lumps o_O I also don't like crunchy vegetables, so I always cook them longer so they're soft. I have no idea if this is just me being weird though, rather than an ASD issue. I can't abide spicy food, but my husband loves it. Also, if someone wants me to try something I haven't had before, for some reason I always sniff it first...

I have foods I can't eat, but just because they won't go through my gastric band. I miss cake.

Sounds like you have that covered! My last meal prior to my execution would be tacos, or tacos or even perhaps tacos. In spite of a bad case of GERD. I just have to go easy on the Pico-Pica sauce. :)

As long as I didn't commit a capital crime in Texas. They don't take last requests in Huntsville.

i like to eat alot of different foods.

I'm not too picky about my food. Which doesn't necessarily mean I'll just shove anything into my mouth, I love cooking and I love fine cuisine. But I also like stuffing my face with big bowls of comfort food. I like my food to have a little crunch or bite to it, but mushy can be good too, as long as the flavor is good. I prefer my food spicy and I wouldn't want to live on a planet without garlic and onions.
I don't have types of food I won't eat, the only thing I'm not too fond of is fishy fish, but I'm trying to teach myself to like it.

I like to eat food that doesn't make me sick.
If it makes me crazy, sick, or stupid, I don't want it.

I enjoy vegetarian foods, especially from different ethnic cuisines. At a public event it can be helpful to emphasize less messy, or finger foods. Lots of ethnic groups make some kind of little packet sorts of foods like dim sum, tacos, stuffed grape leaves, or pirogies.

Hmm...I dislike slimy food with a vengeance. Anything that leaves a fishy scent on my hands afterwards is a no-no, though I don't mind the smoky smell of barbeques and the like. :) So no fish for me, no to things that are soaked in sauce / yes to burritos, certain paellas and pizza.

Aside from the texture preference, I'm not sure food has anything to do with being on the spectrum.

Ive had to stop eating junk food due to the effect it has on my behaviour...! I either get too sluggish or hyperactive, so brown rice, brown pasta, lots of fish, fruit & nuts, cereal, vegetables, and everything i cant stand the taste of.. Must admit its doing me good and my minds a lot calmer...! I can have vindaloo once in a while, as the spices are good for the blood flow. I swallow garlic cloves with water for maintaining a healthy heart...!
