What I'm Putting In My Grocery Cart This Week.

Since my job is related to people's health, I always think it's interesting to see what people put in their grocery carts in the matter of food, drink, or whatever. I believe it can tell a lot about a person. Plus, someone may buy something that I didn't even know existed and that I'd like to try. So I thought I would start a thread pertaining to this topic.

Me first.........

This week (actually tomorrow morning) I'll be shopping at Hyvee. My list will include:
1)Buffalo chicken and Maple turkey from the deli (my Ma wants me to also try the southwestern Taco Bell sauce with it)
2)Cottonelle Ultra toilet paper (on sale, it's time to replenish my tower of toilet paper)
3)Fat free coffee mate creamer
4)Salad, tomatoes, salad topping (hyvee brand - tastes great and cheaper too!), fake crab meat
5)One bottle of red wine
6)Bananas, apples, pears, frozen fruit, almond milk (for smoothies)
7)Margarita taco sauce. (only made in Kansas)
8)Skinny Cow ice cream.
9)Egglands eggs.
10)Hyvee brand water sweetner (low cal with no aspartame)
11)Fat free yogurt.
12)Fancy feast cat food for Waldo
13)Rotisserie chicken at Price Chopper for Waldo (he eats better than me!)
14)Gas from Hyvee (they have a gas card too!)

So what's on your shopping list for this week?
 
I can't go shopping after my accident. But here's the type of things i would normally buy

1. Salad greens, either romaine lettuce, or sometimes Earthbound Farm Salda Mix
2. red bell pepper if the price is low
3. avocado if the price is low
4. potatoes
5. onions
6. canned black beans
7. canned white beans
8. canned refried beans
9. whole wheat tortillas
10. frozen chicken strips
11. ingredients for pumpkin pie: frozen pie crust, Libby's canned pumpkin, evaporated milk
12. breyers sugar free reduced fat ice cream
13. toilet paper, whatever brand is cheapest
14. once in a while, some special meat thing like lamb
15. some fruit like grapes or kiwis or something
16. frozen vegetables, maybe okra, or broccoli, or green peas, or black eyed peas, or something

In order of placing in basket, following my typical counter-clockwise route around the local grocery store:
  1. Bananas
  2. Oranges
  3. Strawberries
  4. Kale
  5. Spinach
  6. Tofu, firm
  7. Veggie burgers
  8. Probably a ready-to-bake $5 square plain-cheese pizza, which I will bake and cut squares off throughout the week
  9. Six bean blend (1 can)
  10. Mixed vegetables (1 can)
  11. Cottage cheese
  12. 1% plain yogurt
  13. Small block of cheddar
  14. Eggs (1 dozen, medium or large)
  15. Peanut butter M&Ms and/or a chocolate bar (likely Coffee Crisp, which you can only get in Canada)

You two sure have a lot of beans in your cart - don't forget to toss in some Beano (and some air freshener too).

You must be an ovo-lacto vegetarian. I learned about that in nutrition class. Someone over at work told me to try veggie burgers, but all I found was turkey burgers. I'll have to keep looking.

Thanks for noticing! My ex-wife was an ovo-lacto vegetarian, and I'm just used to eating that way! I have cans of tuna that I bought last week but haven't eaten yet. I'm feeling lazy about food right now, so I haven't branched out into cooking meat. And I'm only just re-introducing the yogurt and cottage cheese into my diet. We had generally avoided dairy except for the cheese on pizza.

I'll eat meat as a take-out treats...Turkey subs from Subway, burgers or Sausage McMuffins from McDonald's once in a while, and I get smoked ham at my new favorite breakfast place when I go there. But yes, day-to-day, I typically don't eat meat.

I don't know what kinds of grocery stores are around where you live nor how they stock stuff, but in the Greater Toronto Area I typically find the veggie burgers in a distinct "alternative foods" section along with the tofu and other meat alternatives.
 
Welcome back, Daniel, to the world of meat! I don't believe I could ever give up meat, but I like to make sure it's low in fat. My problem is I love ham and it's full of sodium, so now I'm on my buffalo chicken kick and maple turkey. But I still have a huge ham in the freezer from Christmas - can't let that go to waste! :)

10. Fabric conditioner (fortnighty)
11. Washing up liquid
12. 2x face wipes
13. toothpaste (fortnightly)
14. Replacement toothbrush (fortnightly)
15. Replacement mop head (fortnightly)
16. 10pk Cleaning clothes
17. 4 gel air fresheners (fortnightly)

18. Oh and iron water! It smells sooo nice.

I'm a college student living at home, so i only really need to buy my breakfast, lunch, and snack food as well as drinks - everything else is taken care of already though i could buy it if i had to. I plan to buy:

Yogurt
Breakfast wrap stuff (need eggs, shredded cheese, tortillas; already have ham that i can use)
Snack food (chips, string cheese, maybe belvita breakfast bars)
Lunch (whole grain buns, natural sliced cheese, gorton's fish fillets; 2 hormel country crock sides)
Drinks (1 carton Ocean spray 100% juice, 6pk juice, 6pk pepsi or dr.pepper, and 2 bottles of propel fitness water for work this the weekend)

And that's about it! I'm trying to make my meals more rounded and slowly trying to cook more. I can't cook much but I can use the oven and microwave, i'm not as good on the stovetop but i can make pasta and rice, and scrambled eggs.

I like to have a variety of types of beans, because while beans are so nutritious that they get there own section on the MyPlate website (entitled "beans, a unique food), different types of beans vary from other types in the proportions of different vitamins/minerals that they offer. For instance. black beans are high in iron (if you need that), while white beans are high in potassium. I've just been fascinated by how varieties of one type of food vary nutritiously from different varieties of the same type of food.

Hehehe ... I'm borderline diabetic ... which is to say not to the point that I require insulin (and hoping to avoid/prevent getting to that stage) but bad enough that I have severe blood-sugar fluctuations that impact my moods & energy levels. The interesting thing about making these observations in myself is that I can also see the same results in others ... I don't dare mention it to them, especially while it's actually happening! I refer to these things as dietary restrictions, but Those Awful People Who Refuse To Understand assume that I'm lying, and that I'm doing this to lose/manage my weight. Lucky for them they've never actually dealt with me in that state!

No specific aversion to veggies (or separating my laundry) ... I'm just lazy. I'm more than happy to eat veggies that are prepared by someone else ... are you offering? :-)

Geek Alert: This reminds me of when I was in college majoring in computer science and sharing an apartment with two other CS majors ... we'd go grocery shopping together (often at unusual times of night) and had a specific pattern. We called it a Left-Recursive Search Subroutine. :-)

I just realized I had that backwards--I go clockwise! This article on Cracked.com describes the patterns grocery stores use to influence buying behavior. Americans tend to turn right and go counter-clockwise, so apparently it's more valuable to put produce on the right because it makes the best psychological impact. I totally play into the desired buying pattern, right down to the impulse candy purchase at the end! Brits, Australians and Japanese tend to turn left. I've lived in Canada for all but one year of my life (in which I was too young to do my own shopping).

I always buy produce first so I can be sure that it gets in my basket. I just noticed that my current regular grocery store (a No Frills), my previous regular grocery store (a Metro), and the one before that (also a Metro) all had doors on the left with the produce section on the left. In my previous city of residence, there were a couple of Real Canadian Superstores with right-side entrances and the produce on the right, and they felt weird. And I noticed that if I forget something in produce and have to go back to get it, I end up going against the flow of traffic, and it's awkward.

I will go counter-clockwise if I'm only buying junk! I only went to the Superstore because they carried Garden Salsa Sun Chips and Metro didn't.
