What is your view of the AS community?

I have only joined the "AS community" at the start of this year. So far I have been a member of another AS forum, which has now closed, and this forum which I help to run. During my time at the first forum, I became aware that there is seemingly a lot controversy within the AS community. I am referring to things like bannings, moderator hate, trolls, issues with WP, arguments over cures, AS supremacy, drama and stuff like that.

What is your view on the AS community? Have you encountered or have an opinion on anything mentioned above?

This is the first AS community I have ever joined. I never knew that there was a community for individuals like us. I was quite impressed with this one actually. Good you are here then. I do not like drama. So I do hope that there isn't any here. As I can only handle so much. But, thanks for the community. It is nice here.

:D

Aspies being what they are obviously the community is somewhat selfcentered. Comes with the territory.

The AS communities are different and deal with certain situations differently, some actually are strict than others.

I've also noticed places like WP lately has been posting alot of hatrid against NT's (rather prefer the word Non-Autistic) which I can strangely understand they had bad experiences with them, but it doesn't mean that ALL of them are stupid or whatever.

Where as Aspergic forums when it was still open was actually one of the best communities I ever been and actually looked after alongside Calvert.
And also the least controversy aspie site I've been on.

Edit: Site is now re-opened

I think most asperger's sites are full of the most *mildest* affected individuals, screaming hate at the world, while banning anyone who is more than mildly affected by asperger's for being disruptive. When petrossa says the phrase "self-centered" I think he has got it completely right.

I would agree there can be one-sided arguments that arise from miss-communication and the general lacking of "intuitive" empathy.

However, I see much more aggression from parents and relatives, than actual ASD/AS individuals.

As far as the controversial topics, I think everyone has a right to their opinion, so long as it is supported by facts. I only ask that, because it is hard enough to converse with people without having to also contest with made up and fantasy issues that they don't really exist.

Hm... how can I put this without hurting anybody? The Asperger's Community is rather interesting but surprisingly shocking. I can't explain without hurting anybody's feelings.

I learned the hard way of being in the Asperger's Community online. The real life one is a bit more tame, but then again it is hard to get all the Asperger's folk gathered up in my own county, because they are in hiding in my county. :(

I rather just deal with the regular online community in a sense. I just have to learn to shake off the past events. >_<;

Any time you get a bunch of intelligent people together with strongly held opinions, all of whom think that their opinions are more logical than others', you are going to get a few clashes.

I've been active on this forum, AFF, psychforums and aspergic. Aspergic seemed to be full of teens and young adults who were having the sort of issues that I had a quarter of a century ago, but still a good forum. Psychforums was boring because all of the interesting threads got shut down (they seemingly tried to maintain a focus on helping new members with issues). AFF (aspiesforfreedom) is okay but a bit impersonal at times, you have to present your ideas in a certain way or you get pretty much ignored, as it has a lot of members. Also the aspie supremacists occasionally hijack a thread, like refusing to accept that there are any negatives about having aspergers. It is early days for aspiescentral, but with Calvert and Superboyian heading things up I believe that it will do very well.

The internet AS community can be pretty close knit but of course has a lot of dramas, like any group of people. Usually to do with WP members and so on, I find the dramas entertaining. I also have chatted with lots of interesting and fun people in this community, while at the same time I have come across people who make me want to scream WTF on the top of my lungs.

IRL there is less of an aspie community, no one seems to care IRL. I do have aspie and mild autie friends in real life and the whole aspie thing is not a big issue with us in fact we rarely if ever talk about it.

I was thinking that aswell, yet there are quite a few special needs school but the only problem is that its most likely to be pretty far from their house though, you'd be lucky if you actually live right near one.

Yeah I've noticed that too, there are only a few and are usually widely dispersed. Some of these special schools are really good schools, a friend of mine goes to one and it's like better than a lot of the mainstream highschools. The ofsted reports are really good.

I am going to have to say that I remain as sheltered about things as I was before my diagnosis, this is the only Aspergers discussion site I have been on and I have had a few hiccups along the way as one does in any new enterprise, and I really have not encountered more than probably three others like myself in real life. They were a mixed bag between good and evil.
However, I would like to say that all things being equal, if everything I encountered in my life were as enjoyable and understandable as being here is, I would be happier for a start...

Hey, any of you guys want to start an aspie commune in outback Australia with me hehehe

I belong to an online community for people interested in native plants and wildlife. Believe it or not, the same sorts of things crop up. I think it is in the nature of online communities. It is easier to be aggressive or snarky when you are not face to face with people.

I wouldn't mind joining that aspie commune but as much as I like to look at planes I have a great fear about traveling in them

At the moment, it is mixed. I feel very uncomfortable on other AS forums when I see topics all about how horrible "neurotypicals" are. It seems very hypocritical to be so judgemental of all non-autistic people.
Since joining this forum, however, I have felt much more comfortable. There's much less drama.
