Can I get a "Bright not Broken"?
I've basically now seen all the movies I've wanted to see from 2016. Because of that, I can make my list of the five favorite movies of 2016. Here goes:
1. Arrival- Great science fiction movie with a tremendous performance by Amy Adams. It delves much deeper than the average science fiction movie, exploring topics like communication and fate. As someone who speaks two languages, I understand the point about language rewiring the brain, and it asks the question "How do you communicate with a being that isn't like you in any way?" The answer to that is you have to communicate on that being's terms. (An idea that many autistic spectrum people can relate to.)
2. Snowden-It's a shame this movie wasn't nominated for any Academy Awards. It was excellent. This movie showed Edward Snowden and his quest to alert the public about what the NSA and the FBI were doing in regards to data collection. Basically, the government was using terrorism as a guise to maintain the supremacy of the United States. Very well done and well-explained without seeming like a documentary. Only a few things wrong, though. I feel that Joseph Gordon Levitt was badly cast as Snowden, and it heroized Snowden a little too much for his departure to Russia (but I guess if you make a movie like this, you have to take a side, but they could have left out any mention of Snowden's escape to Russia. We all know what happened regarding that.
3. Hacksaw Ridge-Great movie about a wonderful story. Mel Gibson's return as director was excellent, telling a story that I didn't know about. It asks the question about conviction, and how important it is. If you don't have principles in your life, then you'll fall for anything. Also, I thought Vince Vaughn's portrayal as the general should have garnered a nomination for best supporting actor. This is the first drama that I know of that featured Vaughn, and he did a great job.
4. Zootopia-A great movie that takes an animated story and makes it much more than that. It proves that animated movies aren't just for kids and this medium can be used to make real art. This seemingly simple story actually covers a lot of deep issues like discrimination and why people sometimes act like stereotypes. I also liked Shakira's new song in the movie.
5. Sully-Another movie that was robbed at the Oscars. Tom Hanks's performance as Captain Sullenberg was one of the best of the year. The story is told well, even if the story itself is a little tedious at times.
Those are my five favorite movies of 2016. What are yours?
