When something closes...

It was just announced that one of our few Blues bars, is being forced to close because of an impending condo development

The bar is a bit of a dive, but has such great character, and hosted some excellent music over the 13 years it has been open and is one of the best music bars in the city, and the building itself is over 100 years old, any response I've seen is overwhelmingly sad and negative, especially with what will replace it, you can't replace old school character

There "might" be a possibility of a new location, but even so it just won't be the same atmosphere, I just know that

Why do I hate change so much, there are so many favourite art venues/music venues that have disappeared in the last year, and ones that are in character buildings, modern life is so often boring to me and uninteresting

I am an old soul in many ways, I know change will happen and I rarely like it

One photo from the Blues Can, you might get a sense of the vibe, even from the outside, there is one more summer left and then permanent closure likely in the autumn

They say that when one door closes, sometimes the earth opens up and swallows you. Watch out for open manhole covers, I guess.

I'm with you on this. What an absolute shame. I get that things change and times change, it's just the way they change that bugs me. Real ambience, real character gets embedded in the floorboards, into the walls, into the nicks, scratches and dents. Into the graffiti in the bathrooms, the wear marks on the chairs, stool and the bar.

We live in a time of manufactured character, where things are knowingly designed to try and force a feeling. Sterile, pre-packaged character. The overflow of cash and debt encourages people to knock down and build new, instead of working with the environment. Money chasing profit by trying to manufacture what can only grow through community.

So no doubt this place that lived and breathed what it meant to be human will make way for a mall packed with stores where people can pretend to be a celebrity before they go back to their condo upstairs, with an island kitchen where they only "entertain" their pretence, before they head out later to their "character" pub where the bar is fake aged and the walls contain photos of musicians that never graced that soulless space.

Sorry mate, looks like the kind of place I would enjoy a beer.

I get this too. Sadness about change. I was thinking how carefree my childhood was. I was thinking about pre-covid and what life was like. I was remembering the start of a beautiful relationship. I was thinking how much l liked my boss, then she retired, and l couldn't wait to leave that employment. Change always makes me sad these days. Pubs with character and soul are falling by the wayside, and being replaced by sterile franchises.

I don't like the modern look and trends of change.
It is cheaply made, cold with no familiarity, sterile and boring.
It's all about how to make things with less money to make more money and fool the people into thinking it is the "in" thing to like it.
I wonder how many really like it or are most people just herded?
I think herded. Who decides what is the new look to like?

Most all change is not easy for me to accept.
Seeing the natural way places used to be where I live, turned into sky-high condos
is something that really gets to me.
Gone are the original beaches where you could fish, swim, or just enjoy.
Replaced by tall buildings that wall you in as you drive between them.
I do not enjoy that at all.

@Sherlock77 - It's sad. Take some pictures of the building exterior and interior before they tear it down. Someday, Calgary may be proud to host an exhibit of your photography of the evolution of the city, including this cool old place.

It is a great place, fun to hang out at

Reminds me of years ago when Reno's only last-remaining retail hobby shop went out of business.

Still makes me sad so many years later. No alcohol served, but "everyone knew my name"...
