Why I catalogued all my classic car photos...

I spent a long time within the past year, looking through many (and many more) folders of photos to catalogue all the automotive photos I've taken over 15 years

Why? Because I wanted to

Case in point today:

A 2015 blog post a friend showed me - The view from here: Ardenode, Alberta

Light bulb comes on, I recognize that truck!

I scurried off to my giant Excel sheet/database, and found the 2010 photo I took at a farm show - Pioneer Acres - and did a post on the blog, just because...

Was any of this necessary, debatable  But the entire goal of doing that was so that I know what I've photographed :)

In case anyone is wondering, this is what it looks like on my computer, using an Excel spreadsheet as a text document

This makes sense, l would probably add a thumbnail but l am not sure if the spreadsheet would support that. PS. how's your new job??? l hope to start at new place. Won't know until next week

I'm not sure what you mean by a thumbnail? I did add some additional fancy edits at one point, particularly around sorting the text and some colours, but it made the file way too big in terms of file size and performance

You mean the job that lasted four days? Just a poor fit, long story...

You jogged my memory. I remember going to a fair in a town not too far away for several years to see classic "funny" cars. Usually muscle and some drag racers.

I really appreciate forms of good record-keeping. Which sometimes appears to me as another "lost art".

I make good use of Microsoft's Windows Explorer (File Manager) in terms of putting in various types of data pertinent to MP3 music files most people probably don't even bother with beyond the file name and the title of a song.

When it comes to all my photographs, I keep them in various subdirectories catalogued with an individual file name and use Canon's Digital Photo Professional program to view them as thumbnails and have access to each of their EXIF data.

With all of it backed up on flash drives.

In my case, I have 16 years of digital files of photos, pretty much anything I've taken from 2005 to Present Day, except for some folders that seem to have disappeared on me... Plus five years of film photography from 1999 to 2005

You don't see it there, but I do have a column for which folder I can find the photo at, or a negative number for my film photos (yes, all the negatives are in binders)... Every other column has various information as you can see, plus that one generic column for additional notes/interesting facts, etc... about certain photos, getting them written down before I forget...

And I have one "transfer" file, where I do my first entry, when that gets big enough I will then copy the information to the main sheets

Yes, I'm too organized sometimes :)

I didn't say that, but I do have backups of all digital files, mostly because of my involvement in the hobby, and I'd rather not lose all those photos

I said it- but pertinent only to my files.

But then I used to be an insurance underwriter, quite aware of all the nuances connected with Electronic Data Processing coverage. Where a policyholder must document multiple sources of backing up their data, including those not intended to be on the premises. (Though for most household computers, expecting people to retain backups outside your home isn't really a reasonable expectation.)

It's a pain at times, but absolutely one of those "necessary evils". Where no matter how elaborate one's archived files may be, they're only as good as their backups.

As for individual computer users, it's an old story where they simply either forgot or chose not to bother with archiving data elsewhere for basic security reasons. It happens...

Out and about now... Heading out for a walk in the snow... For many years I have had a backup plan for my photos... Even though they are essentially personal photos, not my business proper...

For my personal and family heirloom prints I don't have any real backup plan.

I could put them in my bank's safe deposit box, but then I'd never see them. Catch-22. I could choose to scan them, but that seems like a huge effort. Though perhaps in the future I might change my mind. With my OCD I could see me compelled to retouch each and every one of them. Oh my, what a job that would be!

The worst of it is knowing that none of remaining family members seem to care about such photos, so they will be gone when I am gone as well. :(

The only digital photos in a safe deposit box I use pertain to validating ownership of personal property in the event of an insurance claim. Clothes, furniture, electronics, etc.. That's about it.

On a side note, I just got through reediting over a thousand MP3 music files to take out line noise in all the recordings I made back in 2012 when I transferred all my cassette recordings to digital. The one drawback to recently purchasing quality headphones and hearing some unwanted sounds for the first time. The things we do to make ourselves happy...
