Why is everying I like wrong?

GrownupGirl

Everything I like or enjoy is politically incorrect, evil, unhealthy, worthless, corrupted or made by people who should be in prison if they aren't already. Especially my collections. I'm sick of the constant shame and guilt. Maybe I should only care what others think and burn everything I collect because it's evil. I'm evil, maybe I'll burn myself, too.

If you're saying that you're a big fan of child pornography, there are support groups for that. I encourage you to seek help.

No one can hazard a guess until you get a bit more specific about the things you like/enjoy.

Hmmm... I'm white, male, heterosexual, vaguely middle class, ex-military, retired boomer, and I own guns. Apparently, I am why the world is going to hell. Doesn't much matter what I do or say or believe, it is the "groups" I belong to that people see and not me.

Come now, let's not jump to silly (and rather insulting) conclusions.

As we've all seen on this forum, this topic of "my interests are bad" comes up pretty often. Someone feeling like they're not "acceptable" because of their interests, because reasons. Heck, another one came up just a couple of days ago (I cant remember who posted it).

And usually their interests are not actually bad. Certainly for some of them there are groups of people that dont like said interest, but those people often have the collective brainpower of a roasted duck.

I mean, heck, "politically incorrect" could mean absolutely freaking anything at this point. It just means "something that offends a certain group of people". Even something like my freaking cosplay hobby gets some people all riled up, because apparently they have nothing better to do than look for things to get pointlessly offended by. It's like this for a lot of stuff, a lot of possible hobbies / interests.

Also that bit about "made by people who should be in prison". That doesnt inherently mean "they made something illegal". It can and often does mean "they're a hyper-greedy bag of boiled cat turds that abuses their employees / does shady things / exploits consumers / anything". I can think of A LOT of CEOs and such who should be dumped on a deserted island because of just how unfathomably awful they are.

Of course the thing about THAT one is that for those companies, usually only the people at the top are bad... many of the actual workers, the ones that ACTUALLY make the products and do the work, are normal, nice people. It's like that in the gaming industry: the guys at the top of the big companies are absolutely HORRIBLE individuals who frankly need to be kicked out a window by a horse and covered in bees, but the people who work FOR those snotrags (and do all of the ACTUAL work) are often hardworking people who have a passion for what they do. So that particular reason for feeling bad is a bit iffy. Could go either way on it.

Now that all being said:

@GrownupGirl , you REALLY shouldnt try to stuff yourself into unpleasant boxes based on what others think. It's a very common trap for a lot of us here, and it never ends well.

Particularly considering how a lot of people act. Heck, plenty of things are only "politically incorrect" because there are people out there who genuinely go SEARCHING for things to get (act) offended by, purely so they can go preach about it on social media and get those sweet, sweet likes, like the addicts that they are. I doubt I have to give examples... you all know what I mean, I'm sure.

Be yourself instead of trying to be... er... not yourself. As long as you're not hurting anyone and not breaking any laws, you're fine.

Where did you get the idea that child pornography is the focus of this thread?

To the OP, mostly because I've seen some of your stellar art on the forum and (maybe) have an idea of what you're talking about: the less you start worrying about what others think is wrong, the better off you'll be.

I and many others I'm sure here have had the same thoughts before. I say keep doing you and not somebody else.

@GrownupGirl, you weren't specific about what it is about your art that is perceived as evil,...but in some circumstances, it is nothing but someone else's opinion. Now, if your art is your livelihood, it impacts your ability to put food on the table, you might consider another, more "mainstream" line of art for the masses. Obviously, you can still have your other line of art for more of your "aficionado" customers. On the other hand, if your art is a special interest and a "side gig",...I probably wouldn't waste two brain cells of energy on those thoughts. It is all about perspective and norms.

I can rant on for days about the neurotypical world and their obsession with "sameness", "normality", "conformity", and "order".

How many times has an artist, a writer, and film maker created something and received a mixed bag of perspectives, opinions, and interpretations,...that might not have been what the creator had even thought about or intended?

The first question is does what you enjoy harm anyone including yourself or anything else? Does what you enjoy involve consenting adults? If the answers are no and yes then do what you enjoy. You can run your own life or you can let others run it for you. Your choice.

I guess it depends on what you are really talking about. Otherwise we can only offer our own perspectives on such things. I suppose most of the time it's all relative unless such pursuits manifest themselves into breaking laws.

Though when you consider emotions like shame and guilt, I think the first thing you have to address before condemning yourself is whether you acquired them alone, or if they were programmed into your heart and mind by religious or cultural dogma over time.

As for what others think, IMO their opinions shouldn't carry much weight if any.

Can't help but wonder what kind of discrimination artists like H.R. Giger had to deal with before achieving worldwide recognition. No doubt he took a lot of flak over his artistic vision. Perhaps Salvador Dali as well.

I am so intrigued by this post now! I have no idea what you are referring to - it's hard for me to grasp it at all. Here is what naturally comes to my mind word by word:

  • politically incorrect: stuff that used to be considered funny or at least not a big deal - maybe just honest rather than assuming a fake enlightened posture for the benefit of others
  • evil: something illegal and dangerous that harms people - or just a dark aesthetic, like goth
  • unhealthy: eating too many cheeseburgers
  • worthless: vintage/thrifted/antique - one person's junk is another person's treasure
  • corrupted or made by people who should be imprisoned: drawing a big blank here - makes me think of art made by prisoners, but there was nothing degenerate about it.
If you are more specific, then maybe people can give a more helpful response. I have opinions, beliefs, practices, and interests that are not politically incorrect, that others might consider all manner of evil and would want to make illegal. But that's because society is always shifting, and some people have excessively strong and overreaching opinions. If I have had interests or practices that actually conflict with my own beliefs - if it comes to a matter of integrity, then I work on myself and work on "it", whatever it is. But if it's all legal and doesn't harm anyone, then I consider it nobody else's business. So if you have collections that you don't want others to know about or see - that's not necessarily shameful, that's just private - to be shared with others who understand and respect your interests - no shame in keeping them tucked away somewhere private.

I used to have some dark and twisted interests - nothing illegal, just dark. But for me it wasn't just an interest, I think it had to do with dark things I was going through - I have moved through that now. Now I have some downright silly collections that I love but which others would totally giggle at :-)

Shame is incredibly toxic. I know what it feels like to be stuck in it.

Consider: what would you feel like if you already had left shame behind?

What alternate patterns of thought would head you in a direction where those evil thoghts slide right on tthrough without stopping and sticking?

There are lots of ways people recover from shame.

I hope you can do research on ways to get your brain into a new fresh start.

Thinking like this lead to my "wolf state". It made me think people were and are coming after me because of what I like and believe.
I know what's right and wrong. Not what other people "think" is right and wrong. I refuse. I refuse to be intimidated or scared. I will not let others dictate what I believe, think, or like.

And I will do my best to do this peaceable.:relieved:

This reminded of the artist who painted Jesus with poop. Of course everybody was up in arms about the political correctness of such a portrait and felt the museum should remove it immediately, but the museum kept the exhibit.

Somebody made a portrait of used chewing gum, so pc in the art world is constantly changing.

"Everything I like or enjoy is politically incorrect, evil, unhealthy, worthless, corrupted or made by people who should be in prison if they aren't already."

That certainly describes child pornography far more than it describes anything she's talking about.

It's not clear whose opinion you are citing.
The "shame and guilt" make it sound that other people
have told you your interests are unworthy.

It appears that your conclusions (everything you collect
is evil, and that you are, yourself, evil) are based on the
unwilling acceptance of someone's evaluation of your
collections, and by extension, your own being for enjoying
them.

What's going on? Who features so large that you allot
them the power to condemn you?
