I think I've said before that my parents convinced me to write a short story or novella for a family friend that has published books in the past. If not, then I have now. But, since I've recently fallen into the bottomless pit that is writer's block, that hasn't happened yet. I've looked up various writing prompts online and tried out some of those writing experiments in hopes of clawing my way out of it. Any ideas I've come up with are either (1) too similar to other media, (2) I'm unable to figure out where to go with the plot anymore, or (3) would be better off in the form of some visual media. But since my specialty has always been writing, I know the latter isn't going to happen.

But finally, I've come up with something that might actually have some potential. The following is a book or short story concept that I came up with; I have yet to write anything other than the plotline's summary, but I just wanted some feedback on the idea before I go any further. If anyone takes interest in it, then I may link back the finished work sometime in the future.

After the concept of time-travel leaves the realm of science-fiction and enters reality, a twenty-year-old girl named Emerald volunteers to assist in testing the time machine prototype on humans for the very first time, sending her 48 hours into the future, then sending her back to the present day so that she can report on what she saw. However, when she's sent two days later, she finds her hometown and the surrounding area lying in smouldering ruins and the ground filled with narrow, deep fissures and craters. The only evidence of there ever being human life are the hostile survivors she stumbles across and the terrifying abundance of skeletons lying about. After she's sent back and the shock wears off, Emerald comes to the conclusion that something terrible is about to happen... and that she only has two days left to figure it out and hopefully stop it before it happens.

So, my question here is simple: read the title. I'm mostly directing this at anyone who's a fan of the post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, thriller sort of genres, but anyone who read through the synopsis can give input on it, but I'm not forcing anyone to read something they aren't interested in. What I'm asking is simple enough, just answer the question in the title, but if you want, maybe add in some constructive criticism or other feedback as well, like ways I can expand on or improve the idea, what you liked and what you didn't, etc. The latter is not a necessity, but it'd mean a lot to me if you did.

Oh, and just a quick off-topic addition: whether or not I respond to your comments, I still read them. I always read every last one of the responses I get whether or not I actually respond to them; I appreciate all of them equally, but I don't always know what to say. In my opinion, it's better to stay silent than to say the wrong thing, y'know?

Not really my genre @Spotty01

Maybe build the drama/suspense in the synop
Emerald has 48 hours to prevent catastrophic destruction. Can she save those she loves?

That sounds like a solid start. I myself love sci-fi and have long had a strong fascination of the post apocalypse.

Something I might be interested to see is a different direction of the post apocalypse. Often survivors in the post apocalypse are shown as brutal and violent in a dog eat dog world. I have once read another suggestion that shows that is not likely to be true. When cataclysmic events occur, people tend to unify and help one another (Think Japan and earthquakes). Now I think that was speaking only of nations and places that are civilized and orderly to start with. This has been shown to be solidly false in places that live in near complete savagery at the best of times, where murder, rape, looting become even more widespread after the fact (The 2010 earthquake in Haiti is a shining example there).

Another interesting point I would be interested to see is a post apocalyptic world in a state of rebuilding, rather than everyone living as scavengers and picking at the bones of the old world. How would people live? What technology and standard of living would there be? Has manufacturing and agriculture been restarted? etc.

These might be moot points however. It sounds like your story might be more heavily focusing on the time leading up to the apocalypse and not so much after.

Sound like it could be a good read. :yum:

Sounds solid... I'm just not a fiction guy, but lots of people are so go for it, maybe give her more than 48 hours dude, she's up against a mess it seems : )

No sweat Chance, washing, ironing, looking after the children and a bit of hometown saving. Called multi-tasking.
;) :P

Sounds cool, I write books and whenever I have writer's block, which doesn't usually happen for me, I just take influence from my weird as dreams and decide that a book that sounds like it's on magic mushrooms is better than no book at all. Apparently it works though, all my beta readers thus far have told me that each one of my books, regardless of which, is unique on a whole strange level. So I suppose that's a success? :p I also usually blend historical events into new setting to give it a hint of historical realism, which gives my trippy books at least some realistic grounding. It's a matter of not going too overboard with me, I think I have the opposite problem to you.

Hi Spotty01.
Haven't seen you around in a while. I like the idea and I like Sci-Fi. It sounds like a good plot for a movie to me.
Trying to find out what is about to happen could lead to a lot of interesting trails. I'd say give her a little more than just 48 hours so you have enough time to create a lot of off shoots. And you know me, I'd throw in some rocks, preferably black, playing a part. Not kidding. Remember the movie "Knowing"? One of my favourite Sci-Fi.
Just beautiful.

I liked the write your own story idea too. I've done that on other types of message boards. It's fun.

I have never been into this sort of thing, BUT you got me wanting to read more; to find out more, which makes a fantastic writer!

If you can get someone who usually yawns at this type of thing ( too realistic), to actually lean her head forward and feel: What? Is that all? What is going to happen next? How did she discover the truth? How did she win over the reality etc, that is a pure artist in my "books".

Always loved reading and feel sad, that I do not do much of it now, but at least I have books I can get back into, when needed.

24 hours max. Its all about the ticking clock...

Although 48 hours... a leisurely lunch, a nice lie in. I'll sort it tomorrow :)
